Machinists are responsible for operating a variety of machine tools and equipment to fabricate or repair precision parts and tools. They work from technical drawings, blueprints, and instructions to ensure parts meet exacting standards and specifications.


Essential Functions:

  • Safety and Workspace Management: Adhere strictly to all established safety rules and regulations. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace to minimize hazards and maximize efficiency.
  • Machine Operation & Setup: Operate and maintain conventional and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, including lathes and mills. This includes setting up equipment, installing tooling, and fixturing parts to achieve close tolerance dimensions as required by the technical drawings.
  • Blueprint and Specification Interpretation: Accurately follow job traveler instructions and interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints to produce parts that are compliant with industry and customer specifications.
  • Process and Quality Monitoring: Select the appropriate machine and settings for a given task. Continually inspect and monitor equipment throughout the work shift to ensure consistent quality and productivity. Perform in-process inspections using precision measurement devices like micrometers, dial calipers, and dial indicators to ensure all parts conform to traveler and drawing requirements.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Collaborate with shop technicians, material clerks, and production management to provide accurate information on processing times and material requirements. Assist account management by providing updates on production status and estimated completion times.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Proactively monitor production and adjust feed rates, speeds, and other settings as necessary to optimize output. Identify when machine maintenance is needed and perform minor repairs to ensure continuous operation.

  1. Technical & Mechanical Skills: Possess excellent coordination and mechanical skills. A deep understanding of how machine tools work and a natural ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  2. Attention to Detail & Precision: Exhibit strong attention to detail and a commitment to precision. The ability to produce parts with extremely tight tolerances and identify even the smallest of defects.
  3. Communication & Teamwork: Possess strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with team members and management. The ability to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  4. Ethical Practice: Uphold a high standard of ethical practice in all work, ensuring integrity in data reporting, quality control, and adherence to safety standards.
  5. Mathematical Proficiency: Strong math competency is essential for making precise calculations, reading technical drawings, and converting measurements (e.g., decimals to fractions).


Technical Training Required:


  1. Work Order and Data Management: Training on reading and accurately filling out the Job Traveler and performing data entry into the Envision system.
  2. Blueprint Reading: In-depth training on using drawings to identify surfaces to be machined, tolerances, and other critical specifications.
  3. Safety and Equipment Handling: Training on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe operation of lifting equipment such as forklifts and hoists.
  4. Machine Maintenance & Operation: Comprehensive training on the operation and maintenance of various machining equipment, including CNC, mill, and lathe machines.
  5. Precision Measurement: Instruction on the proper use of precise measurement devices such as micrometers, dial calipers, and dial indicators for quality assurance.


Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment:

This job operates in a medium to heavy manufacturing environment with the potential for exposure to noise, dust, odors, and machining coolants and oils.


Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 20/20 vision with or without corrective lenses.
  • Must be able to safely utilize and wear PPE, such as a dust mask, steel-toe footwear, and safety glasses.
  • Must be physically able to operate hoisting equipment.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week.


Travel:

No travel is expected for this position.


Required Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate.
  • Experience working with machine tools or in mechanical assembly.
  • 5-10 years of machining experience is preferred.
