POSITION SUMMARY:


The Clinical Director of Simulation and Standardized Patients (SIM and SP) provides strategic leadership and oversight for all clinical and educational simulation activities across the Nasuti College of Osteopathic Medicine. Working in close collaboration with the Simulation Director, SP Director, Clinical Skills faculty, and the Simulation Team, this role ensures that standardized patient and simulation-based education effectively integrate clinical reasoning, procedural competency, and patient-centered communication throughout the DO curriculum.

The Clinical Director is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of clinical accuracy, safety, and educational quality within the simulation program. This includes overseeing the clinical aspects of simulation design and delivery, mentoring faculty in simulation pedagogy, and fostering partnerships with clinical departments, the School of Health Sciences, and external health system partners.

The position reports to the Assistant Dean of Simulation and Standardized Patients.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Academic:

Ensures simulation and standardized activities align with educational objectives, osteopathic principles, and current standards of clinical practice.

Provides clinical oversight for the design, implementation, and evaluation of standardized patient and simulation-based learning experiences.

Mentors faculty in simulation and standardized patient pedagogy, including case design, standardized patient encounters, procedural training, and debriefing strategies.

Supports the development of competency-based assessment methods aligned with
AACOM, COCA, and NBOME standards.

Collaborates with faculty to integrate simulation into preclinical and clinical coursework, clerkships, and longitudinal curricular threads.

Fosters scholarly activity related to simulation, including research, publications, and professional presentations.

Contributes to ongoing quality improvement and outcome measurement of simulation-based teaching and assessment.

Administrative:

Provides strategic leadership for the development and implementation of simulation and standardized patient activities across all curricular years.

Oversees the clinical integrity, safety, and quality of simulation and SP operations, ensuring compliance with institutional, accreditation, and safety standards.

Collaborates with the Director of Simulation to coordinate scheduling, staffing, and operational efficiency of the Simulation Center.

Collaborates with the Director of Simulation to develop and implement policies, procedures, and quality assurance processes for simulation-based education.

Collaborates with the Director of Simulation to oversee resource allocation and budgeting for SIM and SP programs.

Serves as liaison between the Simulation Center, Clinical Affairs, and institutional leadership to ensure integration and alignment of SIM and SP activities.

Promotes interprofessional collaboration across Duquesne University programs and community partners.

Service:

Participates in required COM faculty development and training as required.

Participates in student events, including the White Coat ceremony, service day, graduation, and orientation, as assigned.

Serves on College and University committees as assigned.

Participates in other service activities as designated by the Assistant Dean of Simulation.

Research/Scholarly:

Participates in innovative scholarship and research related to standardized patient and simulation education in collaboration with other faculty and staff.

Participates in grant-related opportunities and grant writing to support and enhance the standardized patient, simulation, and task trainer education at the COM.

Participates in standardized patient and simulation-related training, continuing education, collaborations, and other related activities to maintain competency and be aware of new ideas and opportunities for innovation.

Support standardized patient and simulation-based educational scholarship, including evaluation and research initiatives.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sim Administrator and Sim Staff

Completes other duties as assigned.



Minimum qualifications:

DO or MD, or other advanced degree in a clinical specialty.

Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience and demonstrated expertise in standardized patient and simulation-based education.

Prior leadership or administrative experience in academic medicine preferred.

Strong interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills.

Preferred qualifications:

Familiarity with AACOM, COCA, and NBOME requirements related to simulation and competency-based education.

Proven success in designing, scaling, or leading simulation programs within an academic or clinical institution.

Experience standardizing clinical assessment that incorporates SIM and SPs

Alternatively, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Inspires innovation in simulation pedagogy and aligns training with curricular and accreditation standards.

Balances long-term program development with effective operational management of the Simulation Center.

Fosters productive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and interprofessional partners across health disciplines.

Manages people, processes, and resources efficiently while maintaining a focus on quality and learner outcomes.

Embraces emerging technologies and evidence-based practices to enhance simulation and clinical training.

Models integrity, empathy, and respect consistent with the COM’s mission and values.  Supports faculty and staff development and encourages scholarly engagement in simulation-based education.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.
