FLSA Status: ExemptThe Middle School Reading Specialist collaborates with school-based teams to provide targeted literacy intervention to students in Grades 6–8. Using evidence-based practices aligned to the Science of Reading, the specialist supports implementation of Student Reading Plans (SRPs), delivers small-group intervention, monitors student progress, and contributes to schoolwide literacy initiatives under the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA).
- Collaborates to create and implement Student Reading Plans (SRPs) for students identified as needing additional reading support through the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS).
- Delivers small-group and one-on-one instruction to identified students, using Board-approved supplemental and intervention programs.
- Conducts ongoing progress monitoring using diagnostic screeners; documents and shares student growth through regular updates.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers, special educators, English learner teachers, and MTSS teams to support instructional alignment and coordinate intervention scheduling.
- Engages families with regular updates and provides home support strategies.
- Participates in literacy-related PLCs and supports professional learning by modeling and co-planning effective literacy practices.
- Creates opportunities for stakeholders to gain knowledge of the Science of Reading.
- Upholds fidelity of implementation for all instructional materials and strategies aligned with the Science of Reading.
