Overview
Responsible for the safe collection, segregation, transportation, and management of hazardous chemical waste generated across Duke University, Duke University Hospital, research laboratories, and clinics. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations while also assisting with the management of pharmaceutical, radiological, and universal waste.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, segregate, package, and manage hazardous chemical waste.
- Assist in the handling of hazardous pharmaceutical, radiological, and universal wastes.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, and RCRA regulations.
- Maintain accurate records and generate reports using computer systems.
- Communicate with supervisors regarding regulatory compliance and safety procedures.
- Safely transport hazardous materials throughout university and hospital facilities.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, when required.
- Work in laboratory, hospital, office, and potentially hazardous environments.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of hazardous waste management regulations.
- Understanding of chemistry and chemical compatibility.
- Ability to identify and properly segregate hazardous waste.
- Computer skills for documentation and recordkeeping.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow detailed safety procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Move or manipulate 400-pound drums using appropriate equipment.
- Wear respiratory protection and other PPE.
- Work in hot, uncomfortable, or potentially hazardous environments, including areas that may require specialized protective equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field.
- Valid driver's license.
Pay: $21.00 - $25.65 per hour
