The Fuel Supply and Storage (FSS) group is part of the Nuclear Engineering Division located at Duke Energy's General Office in Charlotte. The FSS group is responsible for nuclear fuel procurement for Duke Energy. This position will provide technical, financial, accounting, budgeting, and/or analytical support to the Nuclear Fuel Supply & Storage Group. Perform economic assessments for alternative core configurations and operational regimes, assist in purchase decision making, and develop/implement economically attractive procurement strategies for nuclear fuel. Position will also serve as the business liaison between nuclear fuel suppliers, the Nuclear Fuel Supply & Storage Group and Senior Nuclear leadership.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as technical and commercial point of contact for Duke and nuclear fuel vendor communications.
  • Provide oversight of vendors' schedule and quality of nuclear fuel-related deliverables to Duke.
  • Negotiate beneficial terms for products and services with nuclear fuel fabricators.
  • Develop methods and processes which support cost efficient fuel delivery planning and effective communication between various front-end stages of the fuel cycle (i.e., uranium, conversion, enrichment, and fabrication) and the Nuclear Design function.
  • Perform economic comparisons of core reload design options and plant operational regimes.
  • Perform/ensure quality of economic analysis related to fuel supply proposals.
  • Participate with other procurement engineers in strategic long-term nuclear fuel supply planning.
  • Interface with corporate risk and legal staff to facilitate approval of fuel fabrication purchase recommendations that are provided to senior management.
  • Support industry efforts aimed at sustaining reliable, economic fuel supplies.
  • Develop and implement enhancements to streamline nuclear fuel cost and contractual obligations reporting to internal and external customers.
  • Ensure purchase packages are compliant with appropriate procurement policies and procedures.
  • Review and provide support for budgeting, accounting and financial tracking needs related to nuclear fuel transactions and expenditures.
  • Interface with, and provide guidance for, other Nuclear Fuels Engineering sections as needed for financial and project-related support.
  • Facilitate development and management of documentation processes as necessary to ensure compliance with Company initiatives in response to Sarbanes Oxley (accurate financial reporting) requirements.

Required/Basic Qualifications:

Nuclear Engineer III:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 4-6 years of engineering experience

Senior Nuclear Engineer:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience

Desired Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Business Administration
  • Professional Engineer

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in an organization supporting nuclear station
  • Broad knowledge of engineering practices, procedures, theories, and principles with demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge and familiarity with nuclear fuel fabricators' capabilities and processes
  • Experience and participation in nuclear industry working groups
  • Experience interfacing with senior levels of management and nuclear station contacts
  • Experience negotiating with internal customers and external suppliers
  • Knowledge of procedures, requirements, and interfaces associated with Nuclear Fuels Engineering's core reload design processes
  • Ability to perform financial analyses and evaluations
  • Experience in oversight or procurement of nuclear fuel and fuel-related components
  • Knowledge and familiarity with contracts and contract requisitions
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, presentation)
  • Ability to work independently with general direction
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships at all levels of the nuclear organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work in team environment
  • Strong work ethic with demonstrated ability to meet commitments while working on multiple objectives and projects

Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid office/remote work environment
  • Flexible work schedule - typically four 10-hour days, 2 in office and 2 remote
  • Some travel to other Duke sites, industry sites, and industry conferences/meetings
  • Occasional off-hour emergent work required

Specific Requirements:
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience for Nuclear Engineer III OR Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer for Senior Nuclear Engineer
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
