Dual Fuel - Controls Technician
The Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, commissioning, programming, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance of building automation and HVAC control systems across the Axxon fleet. You will work closely with our Controls Engineering team, boiler service mechanics, electrical division, and building operations staff to deliver reliable, efficient, and intelligent building performance.
This is a field-first role: the majority of your time will be spent on-site at properties throughout the NYC metro area, with administrative and programming time based from our Mount Vernon headquarters.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Installation & Commissioning
- Install, wire, terminate, point-to-point testing, and commission DDC (Direct Digital Control) systems, including sensors, actuators, controllers, and field panels
- Commission and document Axxon Edge devices and single-purpose control nodes at new and existing sites
- Configure and verify BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus, and various Wireless communication networks
- Perform point-to-point verification and functional testing of control sequences prior to site handover
Programming & Configuration
- Program and modify control sequences for boiler plants, steam systems, HVAC systems, and zone valve applications using SkySpark / Sedona / EasyIO and similar platforms
- Configure Axxon graphics, dashboards, and trend logs for property managers and operations staff
- Develop and update sequences of operation to align with energy savings goals and Local Law 97 compliance targets
Service & Troubleshooting
- Respond to service calls and emergency off-hours situations for Axxon-monitored sites
- Diagnose and resolve controller, network, sensor, and actuator faults using remote diagnostics (SkySpark / Axxon platform) and hands-on field investigation
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on control panels, edge devices, and field instrumentation
- Restart and recover SkySpark edge devices and troubleshoot internet/VPN connectivity issues at panel locations
Documentation & Collaboration
- Maintain accurate as-built wiring diagrams, point lists, point-to-point checkout, commissioning and sequence documentation
- Communicate job status, material needs, and field issues clearly to project managers and the controls engineering team
- Support Axxon engineers with site startup and owner training
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- 2 years of hands-on experience in building automation, HVAC controls, or a related field
- Solid understanding of DDC control theory: analog/digital I/O, PID loops, closed-loop feedback, and sequences of operation
- Experience with BACnet (IP and MS/TP) protocol and field device commissioning
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and control wiring diagrams
- Proficiency with control system programming and commissioning tools
- Competency with standard technician tools: multimeters, calibration devices, loop calibrators, and electronic testers
- Valid driver's license with a clean record
Preferred
- Experience with one or more of the following platforms: EasyIO, Sedona (SBN), SkySpark, Niagara Framework (Tridium), Honeywell, Schneider EcoStruxure, Johnson Controls Metasys, or Delta Controls
- Familiarity with steam boiler systems, zone valve control, and hydronic heating — highly relevant to our NYC multifamily portfolio
- Experience with Inovonicsm, Milesight wireless sensors or similar wireless sensing technology
- Knowledge of Local Law 97 energy compliance, RTEM systems, or building benchmarking
- Associate's degree, technical certificate, or equivalent coursework in Building Automation Systems, Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, or related field
- OSHA 30 and NYC SST
