Surveyor in Training (SIT)
Position Summary
The Surveyor in Training (SIT) supports licensed surveyors in conducting land, boundary, topographic, and construction surveys. This entry-level role offers hands-on experience with advanced surveying equipment and software, mentorship from senior professionals, and a clear pathway toward Professional Surveyor licensure. The SIT will contribute to accurate data collection, analysis, and mapping for diverse civil engineering and development projects.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning, preparing, and executing survey projects under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS).
  • Operate and maintain surveying instruments, including GPS, robotic total stations, and data collectors.
  • Collect, record, and analyze field data; ensure completeness and accuracy of survey information.
  • Draft survey drawings, plats, and legal descriptions using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Carlson, GIS, and related software.
  • Perform mathematical computations (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry) for field layout and boundary determination.
  • Research deeds, titles, maps, and legal documents to support boundary and right-of-way surveys.
  • Collaborate with project teams, engineers, and architects to ensure data integrity and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and calibrate survey equipment; adhere to safety protocols on all job sites.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, training, and mentorship programs.
  • Communicate effectively with property owners, clients, and team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field (or currently pursuing).
  • Certificate of enrollment as a Surveyor in Training (SIT) or eligibility to sit for the NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam.
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD, Carlson, GIS, or similar drafting and mapping software.
  • Fundamental understanding of land surveying principles, measurement techniques, and data collection procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and commitment to producing accurate results.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel locally to job sites and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Internship or relevant experience in surveying or civil engineering.
  • Familiarity with state plane coordinate systems, geodetic calculations, and grid-to-surface conversions.
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center or similar survey software.
  • Knowledge of local land use regulations and surveying standards.
  • Desire to pursue Professional Surveyor licensure in Ohio.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and carry up to 25 pounds for extended periods.
  • Work outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
  • Travel to job sites as required.
  • Availability for a standard workweek (5 days, ~8 hours/day).
