What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Supervisor position at DS Smith?
Job Summary: Promote a strong culture of excellence within the facility in the areas of safety and efficiency. Coordinate the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of production or processing machines and equipment with minimal downtime. Involves checking, setting up, and operating various types of production tools and equipment prior to approving for production use.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct weekly Production/Safety meetings with department personnel.
- Responsible for ensuring team members are actively following safety policies and procedures
- Must comply and support all applicable GMPs, Site Security, and Food Packaging Defense requirements that are referenced in the facilities GFSI food packaging safety program.
- Actively engaged and on the floor with PM and WO activity. Ensure PMs are completed correctly and within planned timeframe.
- Must be able to work at minimal 10 hours a day in order to see all three shifts.
- Responsible for Multi-craft maintenance manpower across three shifts 24/7 operation.
- Ability to take calls if needed twenty-four hours a day.
- Ability to flex daily schedule is critical to follow breakdown events and or projects across shifts to completion with root cause identification and actions to sustain.
- Willingness and flexibility to work weekends and or flex work schedule as needed.
- Must be able to understand priorities and flexible with changes to those priorities to better support the business.
- Maintain a sense of urgency in everything supporting operations while completing tasks correctly.
- Follow proper reporting process to include Maintenance Manager, Production Manager and or General Manager any information that may impede the operation of the plant as soon as it becomes known.
- Monitor warranties and service guarantees. Notify personnel of impending expiration dates.
- Assist with conducting selective inventory monthly and verify with computerized inventory of maintenance parts and supplies.
- Take utility meter readings and record usage in computer.
- Locate O.E.M. manufacturers and after-market distributors in order to obtain competitive costs on parts or improved service.
- Order parts and supplies as needed utilizing multiple resources for reduced lead time and cost.
- Establish high morale throughout your department by showing fairness, consistency, and an interest in employee problems. Maintain confidentiality.
- Initiate and/or maintain a cost-effective preventive maintenance program.
- Monitor water treatment of boiler in the corrugator area.
- Oversee and plan contract work and installations done by outside vendors when Superintendent is out of the plant.
- Improve career skills by enrolling yourself in seminars, technical courses, and related college courses.
- Assist in selection, evaluation, and installation of capital and expense projects.
- Implement, maintain, and support all company policies and procedures, including union contract, safety program, and good housekeeping.
- Work collaboratively with the Maintenance and Operations team to accomplish task utilizing idled machine downtime to complete planned work and projects.
- Maintenance KPI tactical strategy for MTTR and MTBF to increase machine up time and efficiencies.
- Other duties as assigned by any member of management.

Education/Experience:
- Able to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy. Able to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurement, volume, and rate. Able to apply concepts of high school math.
- Equipment design and capabilities that can be translated into efficient operation. This also supports the supervisor's role of teacher and trainer for his/her personnel.
- Cost issues to make daily decisions that will reduce overall costs and will help the supervisor find areas that require improvement.
- Quality standards.
- Regulatory requirements including but not limited to wage and hour requirements, environmental and waste minimization, company policies, and personnel requirements including OSHA, DEQ and EEO.
Work Environment:
- Regular work near moving mechanical parts.
- Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and temperature variations
- Noise level is moderate to high.
- Bump caps, ear protection, eye protection, and safety shoes are required.
