What are the responsibilities and job description for the Admission Counselor position at Drury University?

Job Summary:

Formulates and implements recruitment plans to enroll qualified students from a specific geographic territory to become part of the Drury University student body.  Builds external relations with influential constituents (alumni, school officials, etc.) from designated territory.   Participates with management in establishing short and long term objectives for the territory and the department.   

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manages a specific geographic territory by identifying and developing relationships with qualified prospective students, their families, high school counselors, teachers, principals, and alumni resulting in increased numbers of qualified students enrolling at Drury University from the territory. This includes strategic planning and market research for the recruitment region, in accordance with the University’s strategic planning objectives and academic requirements. Anticipates and evaluates competitive educational opportunities and distinguishes Drury’s opportunities from its competitors.
  • Using personalized communication techniques, advises prospective students, parents, and high school counselors on academic and co-curricular opportunities at Drury University.
  • Plans, manages, and executes all Admission-related travel programs for the designated territory, including phone, postal, and e-communication strategies, visits to high schools, college fairs, information sessions, alumni/parent activities, and Summer Send-offs.  Provides the primary contact to constituents in the designated territory on behalf of the University.
  • Evaluates academic and personal achievements of applicants for admission to determine admissibility to the University; evaluates candidates for scholarship programs; regularly and customarily uses discretion and independent judgment to make decisions on admissibility or denial of candidates and other matters of significance; recommends funding levels for scholarship candidates; participates in the final admission decision process in consultation with the Dean of Admission for candidates from the counselor’s territory.
  • Participates in the development, planning and execution of the on-campus admission and scholarship programs such as college visit days, departmental events and weekend recruiting events throughout the year.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

  • Ability to maintain a broad knowledge base of information about the college and its organization and to understand its unique characteristics, purposes, and philosophy.
  • Ability to be flexible to cover campus visits and so forth for other regional directors.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends for phone calling, special events, travel, and office work.
  • Ability to represent Drury University in a positive manner.
  • Ability to follow the statement of "Code of Ethics and Professional Practices" for admission as stated by the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
  • Ability to establish rapport and connect with different types of people in a professional and positive manner.
  • Ability to contribute ideas and suggestions for departmental improvements of practices and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute ideas to the marketing and recruiting practices of the University.
  • Ability to counsel with all prospects, applicants, etc., to ease the transition from high school to college and from college to college.
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff, and administration throughout the admission, recruiting, and marketing program.
  • Ability to maintain sufficient knowledge of all scholarship and financial aid programs and application procedures in order to explain and assist all applicants and their parents in this complicated process.
  • Ability to use related software, especially Microsoft Office to prepare correspondence and reports.
  • Ability to use a telephone to make contacts and follow-up with prospects in a friendly and personable manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multiple constituents such as prospective students, high school guidance counselors, parents, staff and faculty. 
  • Ability to present information in a formal setting to a group.
  • Ability to generate statistical reports from raw data for surveys and territory management.
  • Ability to use a calculator.
  • Ability to understand basic statistics for calculations.
  • Ability to be discreet to ensure confidentiality of files.
  • Professional attire is required.
  • Ability to conduct individual or group interviews.
  • Ability to be creative and execute ideas on how to recruit students to Drury University. 
  • Ability to work individually and in a team environment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, reliable transportation and be willing to travel by airline and/or car to oversee recruitment activities in designated territory.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree
  • Experience in college recruiting preferred
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise student workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
