Optician Assistant

Busy, well-established ophthalmology practice is seeking an Optician Assistant to join our team. The Optician Assistant plays an important role in providing excellent patient care by supporting our optical department, assisting patients, and ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow. We are looking for a friendly, detail-oriented individual who enjoys working with patients in a fast-paced medical environment.

Responsibilities

• Greet patients in a warm, friendly, and professional manner.
• Provide exceptional customer service while creating a welcoming patient experience.
• Assist opticians with patient flow and daily optical operations.
• Help patients select frames that meet their needs, preferences, and budget.
• Take basic optical measurements under the supervision of an optician, as appropriate.
• Assist with frame adjustments, minor repairs, and eyewear fittings after training.
• Educate patients on proper eyewear care and maintenance.
• Process eyewear orders accurately and follow up on order status.
• Contact patients when eyewear is ready for pickup.
• Maintain inventory by stocking, organizing, and merchandising frames and optical supplies.
• Keep the optical dispensary clean, organized, and well-presented.
• Assist with insurance verification and documentation as needed.
• Accurately document patient interactions in the electronic health record (EHR).
• Answer phones and assist with scheduling or patient questions related to optical services.
• Support the optical team with additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Previous customer service or retail experience required; optical or healthcare experience preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic health record systems.
• Ability to learn optical terminology, lens options, and frame styles.
• Understanding of HIPAA regulations and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Professional appearance and positive attitude.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Willingness to learn and be trained in optical dispensing, measurements, and adjustments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in ophthalmology, optometry, or an optical retail setting.
• Familiarity with medical terminology.
• Experience working with electronic health records.
• Knowledge of vision insurance is a plus, but not required.
