Transportation Engineer/Technical Lead

DRMP, Inc.
Gainesville, FL Full Time
POSTED ON 9/9/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/7/2027

Description

DRMP is seeking a hands-on, mid-level transportation engineer to serve as the technical lead in our Gainesville office. This role will provide engineering design and production support to transportation project teams in other DRMP offices while helping establish a strong University of Florida talent pipeline. OpenRoads Designer (ORD) and model-based design are important tools for the work, but the position is centered on sound transportation engineering, technical judgment, and project delivery.
The successful candidate will remain actively involved in transportation design, modeling, and plan production while providing day-to-day technical direction, training, and quality oversight to UF interns and early-career staff. Work will be coordinated with project managers and discipline leads in other DRMP offices. The Gainesville office is intended to strengthen production capacity and develop future talent, with the near-term emphasis on project delivery and staff development. As the office grows, the role may also provide opportunities to support relationships with local and regional clients.

Why join DRMP
  • Serve as the hands-on technical lead for transportation design and production in the Gainesville office
  • Perform meaningful engineering design, model-based design, and plan-production work
  • Apply transportation engineering experience and judgment across a range of project assignments
  • Mentor and develop UF interns and early-career staff through practical project work
  • Collaborate with experienced project managers and technical teams throughout DRMP
  • Help build a sustainable UF talent pipeline while supporting State DOT and municipal infrastructure projects
  • Sign-on bonus available

Your Primary Responsibilities will include

  • Provide hands-on transportation engineering design, modeling, and production support for projects led by other DRMP offices
  • Apply engineering judgment and use ORD and related applications to develop model-based designs, plans, quantities, and other technical deliverables
  • Perform and support roadway design and related transportation assignments based on project needs and your experience
  • Coordinate with project managers and technical leaders in other offices to understand assignments, schedules, budgets, standards, and deliverable requirements
  • Complete assigned engineering and production work accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with project, client, and DRMP requirements
  • Train UF interns and early-career staff in transportation design fundamentals, ORD, model-based workflows, file management, and plan production
  • Provide developing staff with clearly defined assignments appropriate to their experience and technical abilities
  • Review intern and early-career staff work, provide timely feedback, resolve technical issues, and confirm that completed work meets applicable quality standards
  • Help interns and early-career staff progressively develop the technical skills, engineering judgment, and confidence needed to assume more complex responsibilities
  • Establish organized and repeatable workflows for completing project assignments and coordinating work-sharing through the Gainesville office
  • Review models, plans, calculations, quantities, and supporting documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistency
  • Identify and resolve engineering and production issues before they affect project quality, budget, or schedule
  • Communicate regularly with project teams regarding progress, resource needs, technical questions, and potential schedule concerns
  • Support effective work-sharing and collaboration between the Gainesville office and DRMP project teams throughout Florida

What you'll need

  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform engineering design, model-based design, and plan-production assignments
  • Experience in roadway design or another transportation discipline, with the ability to coordinate effectively with related disciplines
  • Ability to receive assignments from project teams in other offices and execute them as a technical lead with limited day-to-day supervision
  • Demonstrated interest and ability in teaching, mentoring, and providing technical oversight to interns and early-career staff
  • Strong quality-control skills, engineering judgment, and attention to detail
  • Ability to explain engineering concepts and design decisions clearly to individuals with limited experience
  • Strong communication, organization, time-management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to balance hands-on production responsibilities with consistent training and support for developing staff
