As we expand our programming, we are seeking dedicated instructors who believe in teaching with purpose, structure, and compassion.
Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced and passionate NYS Certified CDL Instructor who is certified to teach CDL training and holds the required 1,000-hour instructor certificate, along with a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License. The ideal candidate is patient, professional, and committed to helping students succeed both on and off the road.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality classroom, simulator-based, and behind-the-wheel CDL instruction following DFA’s curriculum and NYS training standards.
- Maintain accurate student records, attendance, evaluations, and progress notes.
- Prepare students for written permit exams and road test requirements.
- Support students through coaching, mentorship, additional study sessions, and structured guidance.
- Conduct safety demonstrations, pre-trip instruction, and road safety briefings.
- Represent DFA professionally during school-based, community, and DOC programming.
- Uphold DFA’s mission of expanding economic mobility for underserved populations.
Required Qualifications
- Valid NYS CDL Class A or Class B License.
* NYS DMV–Approved Instructor Certification.
* Must hold a 1,000-Hour Instructor Certificate (required by NYS for certified CDL instruction).
* Minimum 2 years of commercial driving or CDL instruction experience.
- Strong communication, classroom management, and coaching skills.
- Ability to work with diverse populations, including students in correctional settings.
- Reliable, organized, and aligned with DFA’s values of service, discipline, and leadership.
Preferred Skills
- Experience teaching in workforce development environments.
- Familiarity with CDL simulators or vocational training technology.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.
