What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machinist position at Drilling Services?
We are currently seeking a Machinist to join our Boart Longyear team in West Valley, Utah. This role Is not a load-parts-and-press-start “operator” position. You’ll own setups, tooling, quality, and problem-solving.
Responsibilities
Own manual machining from print to part on lathes and mills (setups from scratch, indicating 3-jaw/4-jaw, facing, turning, grooving, boring, cut-off, single-point/threading, basic part holding/fixture decisions).
Select tooling & set speeds/feeds; change inserts, touch off, and optimize for finish, tolerance, and tool life.
Read blueprints & GD&T; hold typical shop tolerances to ±0.001" (and tighter when required).
Inspect your work using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges; complete first-article & in-process checks.
Run CNC as a secondary skill: set work/tool offsets, load/prove programs, and make minor G/M-code edits at the control.
Collaborate with programming/engineering and learn CAM (Fusion 360/Mastercam) to progress toward CNC programming.
Minimum Qualifications
- 3–7 years total machining experience, including ≥2 years manual machining on heavy/large parts.
- ≥2 years CNC machining (lathe or mill): setups, offsets, prove-outs; basic G/M-code literacy (minor edits).
- Solid shop math/trig; blueprint & GD&T fluency; works safely with limited supervision
- Able to handle large parts (with crane/rigging assistance) and stand for a full shift.
- Have strong math skills
- Pass a drug screen & background check
- Possess a valid driver’s license Have a good driving record
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
Preferred (nice to have)
- Horizontal lathe experience (manual and/or CNC).
- CAM exposure (Fusion 360, Mastercam) and fundamentals of CNC programming (canned cycles, tool paths).
- Experience in job-shop/repair environments, large diameters/long shafts, and tough alloys (4140/4340, tool steels, Inconel).
