What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machinist position at Drilling Services?
We are currently seeking a Machinist to join our Boart Longyear team in West Valley, Utah. This role Is not a load-parts-and-press-start “operator” position. You’ll own setups, tooling, quality, and problem-solving.
Responsibilities
Manual machining from print to part on lathes and mills (basic setups from scratch, indicating 3-jaw/4-jaw, facing/turning/grooving/boring/cut-off, simple threading).
Select basic tooling & set speeds/feeds; change inserts, touch off tools; aim for finish, tolerance, and tool life.
Read blueprints & basic GD&T; hold ±0.001" on common features with coaching as needed.
Inspect your work with micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges; complete in-process checks and first articles.
CNC exposure & growth: set work/tool offsets, load/prove programs, make minor G/M edits with guidance; learn Fusion 360/Mastercam to progress toward programming.
Work safely, communicate clearly, and collaborate with senior machinists and engineering.
Minimum Qualifications
1–2 years total machining experience or completion of an accredited machining program.
Hands-on manual lathe/mill experience (school, internship, or work) and familiarity with tooling & shop practices.
Ability to measure and hold ±0.001" with standard gauges; solid shop math/trig.
Blueprint reading with basic GD&T concepts; eagerness to learn CNC.
Able to handle larger parts with crane/rigging assistance; stand for a full shift.
HS diploma/GED; valid driver’s license & good record; able to pass background check and drug screen.
Preferred (nice to have)
Exposure to horizontal lathes (manual or CNC).
Any CAM/CNC fundamentals (Fusion 360/Mastercam, canned cycles, simple toolpaths).
Experience around tough alloys (4140/4340, tool steels) or job-shop/repair environments.
This Role Is Not
A repetitive production “operator” position. If your experience is only loading parts and pressing start on pre-made programs, this won’t be a fit.
