Job TitlePreschool Director / Child Care DirectorReports ToOwner, Board of Directors, or Executive DirectorPosition SummaryThe Preschool Director provides leadership, administration, and vision for a high-quality early childhood education program. This role ensures the center meets all regulatory standards, supports child development and safety, manages staff, oversees day-to-day operations, and fosters positive relationships with families and the community.Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & AdministrationProvide overall leadership and administrative oversight for the preschool center.Ensure compliance with DCFS Day Care Licensing Standards (Rules 407) and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Develop, implement, and evaluate program policies and procedures.Maintain official program records (attendance, health, staff files, licensing documents).Prepare for and participate in licensing inspections and audits.Program Quality & CurriculumOversee the development and implementation of age-appropriate, developmentally appropriate curriculum.Ensure instructional quality and alignment with early childhood best practices and educational standards.Evaluate program effectiveness and implement continuous quality improvements.Staff Supervision & DevelopmentHire, train, supervise, and mentor teaching and support staff.Organize and lead regular staff meetings, evaluations, and professional development activities.Ensure staff maintain required trainings such as Mandated Reporter, CPR/First Aid, and SIDS/SUID education.Family & Community EngagementServe as primary contact with families on program philosophy, child progress, and center policies.Organize parent meetings, informational events, and family support activities.Build partnerships with community agencies, schools, and service providers.Budget & OperationsAssist with budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation.Oversee enrollment, staffing ratios, and operational schedules.Manage facility safety, sanitation, and emergency preparedness plans.Compliance & SafetyEnsure all health, safety, and sanitation standards are met and documented.Respond to incidents and maintain appropriate reporting procedures.Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for children and staff.Educational & Credential Requirements — Illinois (DCFS Regulations)Minimum Regulatory QualificationsUnder Illinois DCFS licensing standards:Must be at least 21 years old with a high school diploma or GED. Educational Requirements (for Directors Hired on or After July 1, 2017)Directors must meet one of the following educational paths:Associate Degree PathAssociate degree from an accredited college or university in Child Development or Early Childhood Education; orEquivalent associate-level coursework (minimum credits in related coursework) and completion of additional administrative training credits or credentials. Equivalent Coursework Path64 semester hours (or 96 quarter hours) of college credit in any discipline with at least 21 semester hours (31.5 quarter hours) in courses related to child development or early childhood education; ANDOne of the following:Illinois Director Credential (Gateways Level I);OR 3 semester hours of college credit in child care administration/leadership/management;OR 3 points of approved training in administration/leadership/management.
Salary : $30,000 - $60,000
