Position Overview

The Control Systems Designer is responsible for the development and implementation of electrical designs for turbine control systems. Additionally, will be responsible for developing new design packages for the company’s standard products and conceptual drawings to support the sales department. The Control System Designer will collaborate with project managers, mechanical engineers and software developers to ensure the seamless integration of electrical components in our control systems.

General Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain detailed electrical schematics and drawings packages to include, design changes, change orders and redlines to existing drawing packages, diagrams, panel layouts, wiring diagrams and wire label lists using AutoCAD electrical software.
  • Specify dimensions, materials and procedures for new products, ensuring equipment scope is defined and documented before entering design stages.
  • Produce complete drawings packages: electrical one-line diagrams, wiring/interconnect diagrams, loop diagrams, I/O lists, cable indexes, fabrication and general arrangement assembly drawings of control panels and terminal boxes, cable and instrument layouts.
  • Maintain modular drawing packages ensuring a quick turn around on standard drawing assemblies.
  • Perform electrical calculations and analysis to ensure the designs comply with industry standards, regulations and customer specifications.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and participate in the selection of electrical components.
  • Generate and communicate the bill of material lists to Procurement to ensure all components for the manufacturing process are ordered and meet production timetables.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any electrical design issues during the development and testing phases.
  • Coordinate with the project managers, electrical and mechanical engineers, software developers and sales team, if applicable, to obtain technical details, optimize designs and resolve issues.
  • Support the manufacturing and installation teams in implementing the electrical designs accurately.
  • Modify and revise designs to correct operating deficiencies and limit production problems.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) activities to verify the accuracy and reliability of the electrical designs.
  • Implement and advise on best practices for leveraging AutoCAD Electrical functionality to reduce workflow time, increase output and pertinent documentation to the customer.
  • Develop and maintain AutoCAD Electrical databases and symbol libraries, drawings and design documents and procedures.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of electrical design changes, test results, and project progress and communicate through the documentation revision processes.
  • Participate in meetings with the project management staff, engineers and sales representatives; to review the production schedule and ensure appropriate manufacturing drawings meet the required contractual and production deadlines.
  • Submit drawing packages to responsible engineers and incorporate markups or comments prior to final submission of updated revisions.
  • Meet with vendors and customer representatives, as required.
  • Assist in the field implementation of equipment and associated control system integration, as required.
  • Receive and apply redlines by following the revision control process and preparing final documentation packages for customers.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years’ electrical CAD design experience in highly regulated industries such as Manufacturing, Automation, Petrochemical, Oil & Gas or Power Generation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or associate’s degree in related field. AutoCAD Drafting Certificate is a plus.
  • Familiarity with rotating equipment and controls is a plus.
  • Proficient in 2D CAD software -AutoCAD Electrical- and Microsoft Office Suite is essential. Inventor and 3D knowledge and experience are a plus.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles related to system design and layout.
  • Must have and maintain working knowledge in design and relevant electrical codes and standards (API, ISA, ASME NEC, IEC, CSA, UL), including electrical components and their specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and cable routing.
  • Experience interpreting and developing electrical control systems and single-line diagrams is a must for level II and II designers.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong communication skills, written and orally, and ability to effectively communicate with clients and other team members.
  • Work independently, as well as within a team, in a fast-paced, customer service driven environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management.
  • Detail-oriented with focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Strong desire for continued growth and learning.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions and Schedule

  • Office environment with moderate noise levels and interruptions.
  • Monday to Friday 7am – 4pm or 8am – 5pm.

Compensation and Benefits

The company provides a comprehensive benefits package, including but not limited to medical, dental, vision and group life insurance, 401K with employer match, paid time off and holidays. Pay will be based on the candidate’ experience and capabilities.
