Safety Intern

Drake is seeking a motivated Safety Intern to join our team for Summer 2027. The Safety Intern will gain hands on experience supporting workplace safety across construction jobsites, materials facilities, shops, and other company operations.

The intern will work alongside safety professionals, project managers, superintendents, and field employees to learn about safety inspections, training, documentation, regulatory compliance, and hazard prevention. This position includes both office and field experience and is ideal for someone who is dependable, observant, and passionate about protecting employees and maintaining safe workplaces.

Key Responsibilities

• Shadow safety professionals during jobsite and facility visits.
• Assist with jobsite safety inspections and workplace observations.
• Help identify and document potential hazards and unsafe conditions.
• Attend toolbox talks, safety meetings, employee orientations, and training sessions.
• Assist with preparing safety materials, presentations, and training records.
• Learn about company safety policies and applicable OSHA, MSHA and DOT requirements.
• Help maintain safety files, inspection reports, certifications, and other documentation.
• Assist with tracking corrective actions identified during safety inspections.
• Observe incident reporting and investigation procedures.
• Assist with reviewing employee use of personal protective equipment.
• Help inspect safety equipment, first-aid supplies, and emergency equipment.
• Promote safe work practices and a positive safety culture.
• Communicate professionally with employees, supervisors, managers, and project teams.
• Travel to assigned jobsites and facilities as needed.
• Participate in company training, activities, and internship assignments.
• Perform other safety, administrative, and operational duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an occupational safety, construction management, engineering, environmental health and safety, or related program preferred.
• Previous construction or safety experience is helpful but not required.
• Strong interest in construction safety and workplace hazard prevention.
• Dependable, punctual, observant, and willing to learn.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work with employees at all levels.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required.
• Ability to travel to assigned jobsites and company facilities.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work outdoors for extended periods.
• Ability to access active construction jobsites and work areas.
• Ability to lift and carry safety supplies or equipment as required.
• Ability to work around heavy equipment, machinery, traffic, noise, dust, and changing weather conditions.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
