Summary

This position is responsible for the strength and conditioning programs for all varsity athletes at California Baptist University. This person implements, conducts, and monitors strength and conditioning, assists with rehabilitating injured athletes, and directs the management of the strength and conditioning facility.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Understand and agree to abide by the mission of CBU and the CBU Athletics Department.
  • Responsible for direct supervision of Strength and Conditioning staff.
  • Accountable for developing and implementing successful sport-specific strength and conditioning programs for all sports programs in cooperation with strength and conditioning coaches and the Head Coach of each sport.
  • Direct all pre-season, in-season, post-season, and summer strength and conditioning programs in accordance with NCAA bylaws and procedures.
  • Supervise/oversee/manage weight room facility to include budget operations, scheduling, and maintenance of strength and conditioning facilities.
  • Instruct student-athletes in proper training techniques, speed development, and plyometrics, and assist with injury rehabilitation and recovery methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to NCAA, university, and conference rules and regulations is required.
  • Develop and enforce weight room policies.
  • Assist in department education of nutrition and banned substances.
  • Work with the College of Health Science in Nutrition and Food Sciences to annually update the Lancer Fuel Guide to distribute to student-athletes.
  • Organize and analyze physical performance testing.
  • Lead and motivate student-athletes to maximize their potential.
  • Remain current on all trends, methods, and innovations related to strength and conditioning.
  • Be present and punctual for all workouts with student-athletes. (Any change in a scheduled workout must be approved by the Head Coach of each sport.)
  • Keep records of all equipment in the weight room.
  • Maintain up-to-date records on the strength program of each team and specific individual workouts of every student-athlete.
  • Return all phone calls and emails to Head Coaches and administrative staff promptly.
  • Coordinates student-athlete rehabilitation with sports medicine; assists with rehabilitating injured athletes and approves return to play.
  • Understand and help facilitate the athletic department’s mission statement.
  • Attend the Athletic Department bi-weekly meetings and weekly meetings with the direct supervisor.
  • Maintain up-to-date information on rule changes and NCAA policies. Report compliance issues regarding countable athletically related activities (CARA) or student-athlete welfare.
  • Ensure the physical, emotional, and social welfare of student-athletes.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervises two Assistant Directors of Strength and Conditioning and part-time Student Workers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers; and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; and five (5) to seven (7) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. National Strength and Conditioning Association certification required. NCAA experience preferred.
