Dr. Rick A. Carpenter Ophthalmology is looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Billing Assistant to join our busy, family-owned ophthalmology practice in Hilo. Responsibilities
- Process and follow up on medical insurance claims.
- Post insurance payments and patient payments accurately.
- Perform insurance write-offs according to payer contracts.
- Process secondary insurance forwarding and coordination of benefits.
- Review and resolve claim denials and rejections.
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits.
- Communicate with insurance companies regarding claim status and appeals.
- Maintain accurate patient billing records.
- Assist patients with billing questions in a professional and compassionate manner.
- Work closely with providers and staff to ensure accurate documentation and billing.
Qualifications
Required:
- Previous medical billing experience.
- Must be familiar with Hawaii insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicare Advantage, HMSA, HMAA, UHA, Hawaii Medicaid/QUEST, and other local carriers.
- Strong understanding of:
- Insurance write-offs
- Secondary claim forwarding
- Coordination of Benefits (COB)
- Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)
- Claim corrections and resubmissions
- Basic CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding concepts
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong computer and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while also being a team player.
Preferred:
- Ophthalmology or optometry billing experience.
- Experience with Medicare billing and appeals.
- Knowledge of prior authorizations and insurance verification.
