POSITION SUMMARY

The Lighting Intern will work with production leadership, lighting staff, and technical production teams to support the maintenance and operation of lighting consoles, systems, and equipment across Dr. Phillips Center venues.

This hands-on internship provides practical experience in lighting setup, troubleshooting, programming support, and live event execution for theatrical productions, musical performances, meetings, and special event rentals. The intern will assist with equipment preparation, load-in, rehearsals, performances, and strike, while gaining exposure to lighting console operation and overall production workflow in a multi-venue performing arts facility.

In addition, the intern will gain introductory experience supporting the lighting design process by observing design implementation, assisting with basic documentation updates, and helping facilitate communication between production team members under supervision. Opportunities to shadow technical staff and collaborate with related departments will provide a well-rounded understanding of how lighting supports both production and guest experience.

This internship will run from June 1, 2026- August 7, 2026. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the preparation, hanging, focusing, patching, and strike of lighting equipment for performances and special events (ETC EOS, HOG4, HES Moving Lighting, sACN and DMX).
  • Perform quality checks, troubleshooting, cleaning, and routine maintenance of lighting equipment, including moving lights, conventional fixtures, LED systems, and special effects lighting.
  • Support lighting programming sessions and rehearsals as assigned.
  • Assist with maintaining basic lighting paperwork and documentation (channel hookups, patching, or focus notes) under supervision.
  • Observe and support the implementation of lighting design, ensuring equipment is set up according to plans and direction.
  • Help communicate updates or needs between lighting team members during rehearsals and technical periods, as directed.
  • Pull, organize, and return lighting gear in accordance with production needs.
  • Maintain an organized and safe workspace backstage and in storage areas.
  • Shadow lighting staff to gain understanding of show execution, cueing, and production workflow.
  • Observe how production managers and technical supervisors coordinate labor, scheduling, and event logistics.
  • Follow verbal directions, printed diagrams, and layouts as assigned; adapt to changes with a positive and service-first attitude.
  • Attend all required Dr. Phillips Center intern training, meetings, professional development sessions, and select special events.
  • Follow and support all operational policies and procedures. Assimilate into the arts center culture through understanding, supporting, and demonstrating the core values.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly relationship with other departments, colleagues, and partners. 
  • Able to remain calm under pressure.  Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy.  Maintain Dr. Phillips Center standards of customer service at all times.
  • Able to effectively communicate in English in both written and oral forms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current enrollment or recent graduation (25–26 school year) from an undergraduate or graduate program in theatre, lighting design, entertainment technology, technical production, or related field required. Preference will be given to undergraduate students entering their senior year.
  • Basic understanding of stage lighting systems and concepts preferred.
  • Interest in both the technical and creative aspects of lighting design and production.
  • Strong working knowledge including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills; Self-motivated with a strong desire to learn and take initiative.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Ability to demonstrate diplomacy and composure in all situations.
  • Ability to uphold the highest level of confidentiality.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position requires the ability to work a variable schedule, evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license preferred. Must have reliable transportation to be able to travel off-site as required (mileage will be reimbursed at the Federal Mileage Rate).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following physical requirements must be met, with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Ability to be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Ability to work at heights and climb ladders as required.
  • Ability to work in dark or low-light environments.
