Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education preferred
- One to two years of experience in ophthalmology or as a certified ophthalmic assistant preferred
- Valid ophthalmic assistant certification preferred
- Professional verbal and written communication skills
- Patient-focused mindset with empathy and discretion
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment
- Comfort with electronic medical records and clinical technology
Patient Interaction & Clinical Support
- Orients new patients to office protocols and clinical procedures
- Collects and documents comprehensive patient histories, including ocular, medical, medication, allergy, and family history
- Performs accurate clinical measurements and documentation in a timely manner
- Supports ophthalmic photography needs, including fundus, anterior segment, and external imaging
- Determines testing order for patients in coordination with clinical priorities
- Works closely with front desk staff to manage patient flow
- Adjusts testing sequences as needed to maintain efficiency
- Keeps patients informed about next steps and providers they will see
- Escorts patients throughout testing and clinical areas
- Troubleshoots ophthalmic equipment and reports unresolved issues to management
- Conducts archiving per manufacturer guidelines
- Performs autoclaving and ensures ongoing instrument sterility
- Seeks guidance appropriately and practices within scope of training
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of exam and procedure rooms
- Monitors and replenishes exam room supplies
- Completes additional tasks as assigned to support clinic operations
This role functions in a professional medical office environment. Duties require:
- Frequent verbal communication with patients and staff
- Regular use of hands for operating tools and equipment
- Standing, walking, sitting, and reaching throughout the shift
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds
- Visual acuity for both near and distance tasks, including focus adjustment
- Exposure to low-to-moderate noise levels
