Position summary:
Arcadis delivers world-class engineering and design services in the Life Sciences sector, supporting clients in building advanced manufacturing facilities that improve patient outcomes. Our Process Engineering team has deep expertise in innovative drug manufacturing projects—including cell and gene therapy, mRNA, oligonucleotides, viral vectors, biologics, API, and chemical manufacturing—and provides full EPCMV (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management, and Validation) services.
As a Senior Piping Engineer, you will join a multidisciplinary team supporting the dynamic Life Sciences industry across the US market. You will collaborate closely with Arcadis experts and client stakeholders to ensure that complex piping systems meet all safety, regulatory, and performance requirements—from feasibility studies through detailed design, construction, and facility start-up.
We are seeking candidates with 8 years of hands-on experience in pipe stress analysis, piping material selection, and piping design—ideally within cGMP or semiconductor environments. The ideal candidate combines deep technical acumen with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset, and excels at leading small engineering teams (2-4 members) to deliver successful outcomes on small- to mid-size projects. Your leadership and technical skills will be key to ensuring project excellence and client satisfaction in this fast-growing sector.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide engineering leadership on projects, engaging confidently in technical discussions with clients and stakeholders.
- Manage small project teams, including work activities, budgets, and schedules, mentor and train less experienced engineers.
- Coordinate high-level construction activities, managing submittals, RFIs, vendor and contractor engagement, and providing construction support.
- Perform advanced pipe stress analysis using CAESAR II or similar software, including evaluation of flexibility, supports, thermal expansion, nozzle loading, flange leakage, seismic, static and dynamic analysis including vibration and two-phase flow effects.
- Develop all piping stress documentation (e.g., Basis of Analysis, Stress Critical Line List, Stress Calculation Note, Pipe Stress Summary) and administer work and track stress packages on the project.
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (ASME, API, ISO, EN, PED) and client standards.
- Develop expertise in industry recognized pipe design codes, standards, and best practices with an emphasis on design of clean utility and grey utility and Hygienic piping systems.
- Execute all elements of process pipe design, including spatial planning, 3D routing, support determination, and construction drawings.
- Collaborate closely with piping designers, process, mechanical, and structural engineers for integrated, optimal and compliant solutions.
- Performing fieldwork necessary to gather data, check tie-ins, verify design vs. P&IDs, and provide construction support
- Develop Engineering Guidelines and Work Instructions, Company standards for Piping Group.
- Understand and be able to develop advanced calculation templates based on the principles of engineering and externally published resources. Support and actively contribute to discussions with cross-functional project team on the facility and system design.
- Interface with clients, vendors, and construction teams to resolve technical issues.
- Attend training seminars/events and conduct industry research to further expertise in key technologies.
- Able to apply good engineering judgement to daily work, including technical situations where full competency has not yet been obtained.
Education & experience:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree with relevant experience)
- 8 years of progressive experience in piping design and stress analysis. Experience in life sciences or Semiconductor projects is desired but not required.
- Advanced proficiency in Caesar II (or equivalent stress analysis software); familiarity with 3D design tools (Revit, CADWorx, Plant 3D) and model review tools (Navisworks or equivalent).
- Strong working knowledge of ASME piping codes, standards, and industry guidelines.
- Proficiency in piping materials, component ratings, and corrosion considerations for diverse service conditions.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team, at times with remote locations, possible.
- Maintain excellent attention to detail, possess organizational, analytical, oral, and written communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
