DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, the Motor Coach Driver is responsible for the safe, courteous, and efficient operation of transit vehicles in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and Navajo Nation regulations.
This is a safety-sensitive position subject to the rules and testing requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Policy and must comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

Key responsibilities include:
- Operating various types of transit buses and vehicles, including wheelchair lift–equipped buses.
- Conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicles are mechanically sound; completing all required inspection and safety documentation.
- Promptly reporting vehicle defects, damage, or safety concerns.
- Ensuring safe vehicle operation and strict adherence to traffic laws and Navajo Transit System policies and procedures.
- Maintaining order and discipline on the bus and ensuring passenger safety at all times.
- Providing safe, timely, courteous, and professional service to all passengers, including individuals with mobility challenges.
- Properly securing mobility devices and assisting passengers as needed.
- Responding to passenger inquiries regarding routes, fares, schedules, policies, and procedures.
- Understanding and applying fare structures; issuing tickets and collecting cash fares accurately.
- Preparing clear, accurate, and timely documentation, including fare recaps, daily logs, mileage reports, cleaning logs, and accident or incident reports.
- Interpreting and following written and oral instructions; identifying problems and implementing appropriate solutions.
- Completing daily interior and exterior cleaning and sanitizing of vehicles.
- Performing minor vehicle maintenance and repairs, such as replacing wiper blades, refilling fluids, and changing light bulbs.
- Safeguarding transit vehicles, equipment, and property.
- Maintaining a professional image and working cooperatively with the public, Navajo Nation Chapters, and municipal representatives.
- Attending required trainings, safety briefings, and meetings.
- Obtaining and maintaining a Navajo Nation Purchase Card, as assigned.
- Accurately maintaining receipts and transaction records.
- Preparing purchase requisitions and entering expense data into the Wells Fargo Commercial Card Expense Reporting System, including receipts, invoices, dates, and authorization numbers.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B, with Passenger Endorsement; and Two (2) years of experience operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weight comparable to motor coaches.
- Must pass a favorable background investigation.
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and have an excellent driving record for the past three (3) years.
- A medical examination in compliance with the federal motor carrier safety regulations and pass a pre-employment drug test in accordance with the Federal Transit Administration regulations.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and Navajo Nation transportation regulations.
- Knowledge of safe vehicle operation and emergency response procedures.
- Knowledge of fire extinguisher use and safety protocols.
- Knowledge of Navajo Reservation highways, streets, service areas, and scheduled routes.
- Knowledge of basic computer operation and applicable software systems.
- Skill in two-way radio communication.
- Skill in maintaining composure and exercising sound judgment during stressful or emergency situations.
- Ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to communicate honestly, respectfully, and professionally with passengers, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work long hours, varied schedules, and sit for extended periods.
- Ability to interact effectively with a culturally, physically, and mentally diverse population.
- Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the position.
- CPR and First Aid certification required.
