Role Description The Director of Special Events is a full-time, on-site role based in Santa Monica, CA, responsible for leading the strategy, planning, and execution of signature events and programs in Downtown Santa Monica. This role oversees the full event lifecycle, including concept development, scheduling, permitting, vendor and partner coordination, and on-the-ground production management. The Director manages event budgets, negotiates contracts, and ensures events align with organizational goals, brand standards, and community expectations. Day-to-day responsibilities include supervising event staff and contractors, collaborating with marketing and communications teams on promotional plans, building relationships with sponsors and stakeholders, and monitoring event performance through data and feedback. The role also involves continuous improvement of the events portfolio, creating inclusive, engaging experiences that drive economic activity and strengthen the downtown community.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong Event Planning and Event Management skills to design, organize, and oversee complex, multi-day or recurring events (minimum of 5-7 years experience)
- Candidates should possess Event Production skills to manage logistics, technical needs, vendor coordination, and on-site operations.
- Candidates should possess Sales skills, particularly in sponsorship development, partner relations, and revenue-generating event opportunities.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing cross-functional teams, contractors, and volunteers in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with public agencies, businesses, and community stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities, with attention to detail and the capacity to handle multiple events and deadlines.
- Experience with community-focused or destination events, ideally in urban districts, downtowns, or tourism-focused environments.
- Proficiency with standard office and event management tools; familiarity with CRM, project management, and budgeting software is beneficial.
