ABOUT US: Downstate Health Physicians represents the faculty of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn’s only academic medical center. The position being offered is Front Desk Receptionist for the Orthopaedics Department. The ideal candidate would support clinical practice operations by performing a variety of administrative functions pre-service, time of service and post-service for patient visits. In this service-oriented position, the Front Desk Receptionist serves as the liaison between patients and clinical staff. The incumbent is responsible for efficient day-to-day practice operations, including: patient scheduling, insurance verification, referral/authorization, patient registration and other key functions. The Front Desk Receptionist maintains an environment of service excellence and respect within the office and is responsible for providing a first-class experience to patients within the clinic setting.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares office for daily activities; assembles patient charts and updates patient profiles; maintains waiting area in neat and clean condition.
- Greet and check in patient for scheduled appointments; assist in completing necessary forms
- Register patients in Athena EMR computer system
- Verifies and updates patient insurance and demographic information as needed
- Verifies patient insurance eligibility and obtains all pre-service information necessary including authorizations and referrals as required
- Handles patient check-out, collects time of service payments and previous balances. Posts co-payment information in billing system. Reconciles cash payment received and maintains cash receipt log
- Works with care teams, patients, and outside facilities to obtain necessary information required for care
- Supports clinical practice operations by providing cross coverage for a variety of administrative functions
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times; HIPPA adherence
- Must be customer service-oriented and maintain a professional appearance at all times
- Knowledge of scheduling and medical terminology
- Excellent patient service, organizational and communications skills
- Demonstrates a positive attitude and ability to solve problems independently within the scope of responsibility
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) year work experience in private practice or hospital setting
- Experience working with insurances and obtaining authorizations
- Strong phone and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills including typing, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Athena EMR preferred
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Bilingual (Créole or Spanish) a plus
