What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Staff Development position at Downey Post Acute?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary purpose of your job position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct all in-service educational programs throughout the facility in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations, and as may be directed by the administrator, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists the Assistant Director of Nursing Services in managing and directing the Nursing Services Department.
- Plan, develop, direct, evaluate, and coordinate educational and on-the-job training programs.
- Incorporate commercially produced instruction material and training aids into existing in-service programs as deemed necessary.
- Develop, evaluate, and control the quality of in-service educational programs in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Secure, develop and maintain records, reports, instructional manuals, reference materials, etc., pertinent to in-service educational programs.
- Assist the QAPI Program in developing and implementing a quality assurance program for in-service training.
- Develop and participate in the planning, conducting, and scheduling of orientation programs that orient newly hired personnel to their position, the facility’s policies and procedures, resident rights and responsibilities, etc.
- Assist licensed nursing personnel (i.e., RNs, LPNs, and Nurse Aides) in obtaining in-service training to keep their license current in accordance with state law. Provide in-service training as necessary/required.
- Responsible for providing direct patient care when not performing DSD duties. Where state or federal law mandates a minimum amount of time to be expended in any period (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) on DSD functions, the DSD should perform those functions during the mandated time and then return to the floor to participate in direct patient care activities unless directed to do otherwise by the DNS or ED.
- Meet with department supervisors, on a regularly scheduled basis, and solicit advice concerning their training needs, and assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.
- Implement recommendations from the QAPI Committee as they relate
- Develop and direct orientation programs for all personnel, in accordance with our established policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular or special in-service training sessions for staff to ensure they remain current on new procedures, changes in policies, etc,
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
- Conduct departmental performance evaluations in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures.
- Ensure that individual employee training records are maintained and a copy to be provided to HR to be filed in the employee’s personal record.
- Ensures that nursing department employment actions are administered fairly and in compliance with the facility’s Policy Against Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation.

Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must have, as a minimum, 2 year of experience as a RN/ LVN/ LPN in a hospital, long-term care facility, or other related health care facility.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Must possess an active license to practice as a RN/ LVN/ LPN license valid in this state.
