Job Title: Developmental Interventionist

DSL Team: Early Ed Programs

Reports to: Clinical Services & Children's Programs Director

Status: Full Time

Hours: Varied


Position Summary:

The Developmental Interventionist provides developmental and educational services for children with Down syndrome, ages birth through three years, through the KEIS program (Kentucky Early Intervention Services), formally known as First Steps, and developmental classes for preschool-age children.


Essential Duties:

  • Provide developmental intervention year-round in the family home, childcare centers, and DSL educational group sessions. These sessions are integrated, multi-disciplinary, activity and play based. Sessions are experiential to enhance children's sensory stimulation, develop communication skills, and encourage peer interaction.
  • Help children reach developmental milestones.
  • Conduct developmental assessments of the individual children receiving services through DSL's Early Childhood Education Program.
  • Provide information and resources to caregivers regarding their child's development and family support needs.
  • Inform parents/guardians/service providers of the services and supports available through DSL and the community.
  • Participate in developing Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) and Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for children receiving services from DSL.
  • Design and implement educational programs according to the goals or outcomes included on the child's IFSP, IEP or ISP.
  • Utilize a team approach to develop and implement such plans with team members including, but not limited to, parent(s), speech and language, occupational, and physical therapists, developmental interventionists, and school or preschool faculty (as applicable).
  • In a timely manner, provide transition information, resources, and referrals for families whose children are exiting First Steps and/or entering preschool or kindergarten.
  • Provide advocacy services as needed in school and community settings (Attend ARC meetings, etc.).
  • Supervise student teachers.
  • Design and implement developmental classes.

Qualifications, Certifications, Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Master's degree in education preferred.
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education (IECE) preferred or Certificate in an area of special education. REQUIRED
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in early education and/or special education.
  • Working knowledge of child development and how Down syndrome impacts development.
  • Excellent professional boundaries.
  • Valid driver's license.
