What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer position at Douglas Manufacturing Company, Inc.?
Join our engineering team and help build the products that keep bulk material moving. As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll take ideas from concept to production—designing components and assemblies, supporting application and quoting, and partnering with manufacturing to turn solid engineering into reliable, high-quality product on the floor. This role offers hands-on involvement in new product development, continuous improvement, and D365 data accuracy (BOMs/routings/cost inputs) that directly impacts execution, margins, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering, Design, and Product Support
- Create and maintain 2D drawings and 3D models (SolidWorks preferred), including detailed manufacturing prints and revisions.
- Support new product development, R&D efforts, and engineering changes for existing products.
- Provide product selection and application support to internal teams and customers; assist with troubleshooting and problem resolution.
- Work with Production leadership to ensure shop teams have current drawings, specifications, and documentation needed to build orders correctly.
Costing, Quoting, and ERP Data Integrity
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and production routes within Microsoft Dynamics 365 (D365).
- Conduct and evaluate time studies to establish and improve labor standards and routing accuracy.
- Support estimating inputs for costs and selling price development (materials, labor, routing assumptions, etc.).
- Use analytical tools (Excel and related systems) to evaluate product cost drivers and recommend improvements.
Manufacturing and Process Support
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality to improve product build consistency and address quality concerns.
- Program CNC equipment as required, including G-code programming, to support internal manufacturing needs.
- Participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives and support other technical assignments as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience).
- 5 years of mechanical engineering experience in a manufacturing environment (preferred; will consider equivalent experience).
- Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) and strong working knowledge of standard engineering documentation.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and comfort working in ERP systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and customers (written and verbal).
- Demonstrated reliability, strong work ethic, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience creating and maintaining BOMs and routings in Microsoft Dynamics 365 (or similar ERP).
- Experience performing time studies and translating results into routings/standards.
- CNC programming experience (including G-code) and familiarity with machining/manufacturing processes.
- Conveyor components or industrial product experience (application engineering exposure is a plus).
Work Environment
This role is primarily office-based with regular interaction on the manufacturing floor. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, elevated work areas, temperature extremes (non-weather), outdoor weather conditions, and moderate noise levels.
