For more than 40 years, Douglas Gardens Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) has served the Miami-Dade community with compassionate, high-quality mental health services. We are currently seeking Full-Time or Part-Time Peer Specialists to join our North Miami team and support individuals living with mental health and/or substance use conditions on their recovery journey.
Position Summary
The Peer Specialist uses lived experience with behavioral health and/or substance use recovery—along with skills gained through training—to support, guide, and empower individuals in recovery. This role serves as a mentor, advocate, and role model, sharing personal recovery experiences when appropriate. The Peer Specialist supports clients attending the Drop-In Center and helps foster a welcoming, recovery-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in coordinating daily Drop-In Center activities
- Ensure members feel welcomed, supported, and comfortable
- Serve as a mentor and role model to program participants
- Provide education and support related to personal responsibility, illness management, symptoms, and social skills
- Support members in setting and achieving personal recovery goals
- Assist with the creation and updating of Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP)
- Help clients identify natural supports and community resources
- Serve meals in compliance with food safety standards
- Accurately document all client interactions and services provided
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 2 years lived experience with a mental health condition and/or substance use disorder
- Currently living a wellness- and recovery-oriented lifestyle
- Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) preferred or willingness to obtain certification within 12 months of hire
- Bilingual: English/Spanish or English/Creole required
- Ability to pass a Level 2 background screening and drug screening
