As our Recreation Leader, you’ll create a safe, clean, and fun environment for youth in our before/after-school and summer camp programs. Planning activities, prepping snacks, supporting and coaching staff, and guiding kids through everything from daily routines to off-site adventures. If you’re the kind of leader who can keep things organized, upbeat, and safety-first while still making kids feel seen and excited to be here, this is your lane.

Recreation Leader must be able to work both the morning shift, 6:45 – 8:45 AM, and the afternoon shift, 3:00 – 6:00 PM. These positions are not seasonal; they are ongoing throughout the year.

This recruitment will fill two 19-hour vacancies and one 22-hour vacancy at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center - Valley location. Positions of 19 hours or less per week do not qualify for benefits. Positions of 20-29 hours per week do not qualify for health benefits but are eligible for prorated sick and annual leave and Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) benefits.

Primary Objectives

Performs intermediate work leading and overseeing a variety of recreation and activity programs at assigned and/or designated recreation facilities; performs related tasks as apparent or assigned.

This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the development, implementation, and conduct of recreation programs and activities, including direct supervision and guidance of youth participants; prepares lesson plans and leads games and craft activities; works as primary contact at camps and during off-site trips.
  • Maintains records of programs and activities including, but not limited to, rosters, daily roll sheets/attendance records, time cards, and emergency contacts; ensures up-to-date and accurate contact list for parents and/or legal guardians and ensures that children are picked up in accordance with authorizations on file.
  • May receive funds at events; maintains accurate inventory of program supplies, games, crafts, etc.; participates in the shopping/ordering of supplies and snacks.
  • Inspects facility to ensure youth safety and maintains a clean and organized recreational area; cleans up spills and unsanitary conditions when they occur.
  • Prepares supplies and materials for programs and activities and prepares snacks; arranges chairs, tables, and sporting or exercise equipment in designated rooms or other areas for scheduled group activities; operates audiovisual equipment, as needed.
  • Coordinates activities; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; coaches, instructs, and provides training to employees as necessary; prepares activity and snack schedules; participates in training opportunities and attends staff meetings.
  • Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties.
  • Periodically drives children and other passengers in a county vehicle for off-site activities; monitors trip petty cash and activities of youth during recreational trips or tours; disciplines youth participants according to established policies and procedures, as necessary.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience leading recreational activities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
  • Valid Driver's License
  • First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogen, CPR, and AED certification within six (6) months of date of employment

  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.

  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. crowds, heavy traffic, large equipment).
  • Work occasionally requires exposure to wet/humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens (may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment).

Douglas County provides benefits to full-time employees. Benefits are prorated for part-time employees working 20–29 hours per week. Part-time employees working 19 hours or less, as well as on-call employees, are not eligible for benefits.

No Nevada State income tax.

Retirement – Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS)
Douglas County contributes 36.75% of an eligible regular member and 50% of an eligible Police and Fire member's salary for retirement.

Deferred Compensation Plans – Employees have the option to participate in a deferred compensation program through VOYA, which is funded by the employee.

Compensation
Douglas County uses a Pay for Performance compensation system, where employees receive annual performance evaluations and may be eligible for merit-based salary increases. Qualified employees can earn up to a 3% merit increase on their anniversary date, and may also receive an annual Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) during the first pay period of each fiscal year, based on the Consumer Price Index, up to a maximum of 5%. In addition, eligible employees who demonstrate exceptional, above-and-beyond performance may receive further compensation through the County’s Recognition of Excellence Program.
