Play a part in helping Douglas County's Juvenile Probation office achieve its mission to reduce delinquent behavior among youth by providing targeted interventions that address their specific needs while prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community. While supervising a caseload of juvenile probationers, the Juvenile Probation Officer position also works to counsel and advise juveniles and their families, provide resources, and work with other staff and agencies in developing treatment and intervention plans for youth offenders. The right candidate will be an individual with a dedication to helping juveniles and the drive and commitment to helping them toward better outcomes.
Performs intermediate work performing a variety of duties related to the prevention, treatment or intervention to the Juvenile Court for youth offenders or those at risk of offending the law as well as enforcement of Court ordered supervision. This position is distinguished from the Juvenile Probation Officer Senior in that the latter performs duties under less supervision and may supervise more complex cases; performs related tasks as apparent or assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

- Supervises a caseload of probationers; periodically visits probationer’s home, place of employment, and/or school; conducts weapons and contraband searches and drug testing; enforces adherence to court ordered conditions of probation.
- Counsels and advises juveniles and their families regarding personal, social, educational, financial, vocational, and health related issues; Conducts assessments and interviews; works with other staff and agencies in developing treatment plans; teaches and models social skills; applies behavior modification techniques; plans and supervises various programs, such as physical education, work experiences, outdoor intervention programs and recreational activities.
- Arrests, detains and transports probationers who have violated court orders; may perform a variety of booking and intake duties and makes determinations about formally processing cases through the court system and about requiring secured detention prior to a court hearing; transports to and from facilities and juvenile programs and provides transportation for other probation needs.
- Investigates the background and criminal records of juveniles and prepares and presents pre-sentencing reports before the Court; investigates and processes probation violations and makes recommendations to the Court.
- Provides 24-hour standby support to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department regarding juvenile matters.
- Provides resources for youth with mental health and suicidal ideation crisis.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Maintains a variety of records and case files; writes reports, statements, legal documents, correspondence and other written materials; presents reports to various Courts, officials and agencies.
- Maintains relationships with law enforcement, Courts, social service and community resource services; participates in juvenile delinquency prevention activities such as speaking engagements, training sessions or working with youth groups.
- Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to job duties.
- May assist with the Outdoor Behavior Health Program for assigned juveniles.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in providing probation and casework/counseling services to juveniles; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at date of employment.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
- Valid Driver's License
- Nevada POST Category I Basic Certification within one (1) year of date of employment.
- CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
