The Douglas County Airport Operations Specialist plays a key part in ensuring the safe and compliant operations of the Minden-Tahoe Airport. Serving in a hands-on role, this position sees to the maintenance and upkeep of airport facilities, ensures compliance checks and inspections are completed and properly documented, and serves as a resource for tenants, outside agencies, and members of the public. The ideal candidate is an individual with a drive to provide high level customer service while working as part of the team that ensures the success of overall airport operations and objectives.Primary Objectives
Performs intermediate work performing tasks related to the safety, security, upkeep, and maintenance of runways, taxiways, aprons, buildings, road, grounds, pavements, and associated areas of the Airport. Work involves ensuring that facilities are in operational condition at all times and in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety regulations. Tact and diplomacy are required in contacts with pilots, businesses, the general public, employees and local officials and Airport Advisory Council members; performs related tasks as apparent or assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

- Performs inspections of airport infrastructure including runways, taxiways, aprons, fuel facilities, and other areas in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification standards for safety and compliance.
- Insures and updates Notices to Airmen (NOTAM’s) for the opening, closing, and condition reporting of the airfield as necessary.
- Performs administrative functions for completing and compiling daily and other inspection forms, operational record keeping, aircraft incident reports, emergency medical responses, wildlife hazard incidents (bird or other animal strikes) to include removal of said wildlife and the issuance of citations and/or warnings.
- Performs wildlife management control, mitigation, and depredation.
- Completes written and electronic inspection and correction reports, work logs and reports, and other recording or reporting consistent with work related activity.
- Conducts compliance checks for transit traffic and month-to-month spaces and documents findings to ensure payment accuracy.
- Assists in monitoring, educating, and enforcing tenant/user adherence to Minden-Tahoe Airport Minimum Standards and Rules & Regulations.
- Performs equipment inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Works in conjunction with Public Works staff and other outside agencies to remove snow from roadways, parking lots, walkways, and airfield pavements, as well as performing and reporting timely airport surface assessments during periods of inclement winter weather.
- Interacts with local, state, and federal agencies and performing duties and responsibilities as required by the Airport Emergency Plan during emergency situations.
- Performs maintenance of runway, taxiway, field lighting systems, signs, and similar work, ensuring compliance with FAA requirements and regulations.
- Performs duties to monitor and report security regulations, Uniform Fire Code regulations and vehicle operation and parking rules.
- Escorts and monitors individuals on airfield operations area (OA) in conjunction with special events, outside agency coordination and construction projects.
- Assists with the general oversight of airport and tenant construction projects for safety and regulatory compliance.
- Helps plan and perform general maintenance of airport facilities including limited electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, carpentry, painting, equipment repair, landscape and tree maintenance, irrigation control and maintenance, concrete and asphalt maintenance including patching, paving, and crack sealing, manual and automatic gate/lock systems, fence repair, and related work.
- Operates various types of equipment and vehicles including tractor, backhoe, forklift, bucket lift, paint striping machine, crack sealing equipment, mowers, light and heavy-duty vehicles including dump trucks, as well as light and heavy snow removal vehicles and equipment.
- Handles inquiries and requests from the public, tenants, and outside agencies with the highest level of customer service and professionalism.
- Maintains awareness of the current activity in and around the airport boundaries.
- Uses County vehicle to perform various tasks related to the job duties.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
- Position requires a High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of experience in airport operations, aviation, or a closely related field.
