Lead Shop Welder/Fabricator
Double Black Design does Heirloom Quality Construction in Angel Fire, New Mexico
We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated Lead Shop Welder/Fabricator to manage our shop operations, lead a fabrication team, and execute complex welding and fabrication projects. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional technical expertise, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities1. Fabrication and Welding Excellence
- Perform advanced welding (MIG, TIG, SMAW) on various materials, primarily carbon steel, maintaining high-quality standards and tight tolerances.
- Read, interpret, and accurately execute engineering blueprints, schematics, and shop drawings.
- Lay out, measure, cut, fit, and fabricate components and structural assemblies from raw materials (plate, pipe, structural shapes).
- Operate and maintain a wide range of shop machinery, including plasma cutters, press brakes, saws,, and grinding equipment.
2. Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise a team of welders and fabricators, providing mentorship, training, and technical guidance to ensure efficiency and adherence to quality standards.
- Assign daily tasks and manage workflow to meet production schedules and deadlines.
- Conduct in-process and final inspections to ensure all fabricated items meet specifications and quality control requirements.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and productive team environment.
3. Shop Operations and Safety
- Manage inventory of welding consumables, materials, and equipment, ensuring necessary supplies are available.
- Implement and enforce all company safety policies and procedures (e.g., proper PPE usage, hot work permits, fire watch) to maintain a safe working environment.
- Oversee the routine maintenance and calibration of welding machines and shop tools.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying and implementing efficiencies in fabrication processes.
QualificationsRequired Skills and Experience
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of a recognized apprenticeship or vocational program in Welding/Fabrication is highly desirable.
- Experience: Minimum experience is whatever it takes to make you a good welder or fabricator. We don't punish smart people who are good at getting good at things quickly.
- Certification: Current and valid welding certifications (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX) are preferred.
- Technical Proficiency: Mastery of common welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick) and extensive proficiency in precision layout and fitting.
Preferred Skills and Familiarity
- Software Proficiency: Familiarity with AutoCAD or SolidWorks for reviewing or basic modification of design files (2D and 3D) is strongly preferred.
- Problem-Solving: Proven ability to troubleshoot fabrication issues, resolve complex fit-up challenges, and optimize workflow.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with project managers, engineers, and team members.
