Dorchester County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and student-centered School to Career Counselor to high school students in developing clear, actionable pathways toward college, careers, and industry credentials. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Prevention and Principal of Dorchester Career & Technology Center, this role emphasizes school counseling, career exploration, workforce readiness, and post-secondary planning, while aligning with the Maryland State Department of Education Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
The School to Career Counselor works collaboratively with school staff, CTE instructors, local businesses, and community partners to connect classroom instruction with real-world industry experience.
DUTIES:
- Implements the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) framework to support students’ academic achievement, personal/social development, and career development.
- Serves a vital role in the multi-tier systems of support (MTSS) process working collaboratively, with stakeholders to support student success and attendance.
- Processes necessary referrals to appropriate school and community resource personnel for diagnostic assistance.
- Educate students and other stakeholders on opportunities for apprenticeships, career pathways leading to industry-recognized credentials, postsecondary education, occupational training, and career connected learning opportunities.
Facilitates the marketing and recruitment of students and business partners into Career and Technical Education, career connected learning and MD Apprenticeship Programs. - Recruit and manage relationships with local employers, Chambers of Commerce, and regional workforce development boards to create meaningful partnerships.
- Reviews students’ secondary plans annually with School Counselors and Career Coaches to identify potential career connected learning and MD Apprenticeship participants.
Analyze data and match students with appropriate industry-specific sites based on career goals, monitor their progress, and assist them in developing professional workplace - Plan, coordinate, supervise and serve as teacher of record for career connected learning experiences including MD Apprenticeship. Including conducting on-site observation of students in career connected learning experiences
- Collaborates with Career Coaches to plan career exploration events and programs.
- Attends meetings related to career connected learning and apprenticeship opportunities.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills while effectively teaching, advising, mentoring, and collaborating with students, families, colleagues, and community partners in both in-person and virtual settings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a Master’s degree in School Counseling, required.
- Eligible for and hold, prior to appointment, the Maryland State Department of Education Certification for School Counselor in accordance with COMAR 13A.12.03.02.
- Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching and/or counselor experience preferred.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to teach, advise, mentor, and collaborate face-to-face and virtually with a wide range of learners and stakeholders (students, parents, colleagues, business partners).
- General knowledge of school organization and programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and local industry.
- Experience in youth development.
- Available to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and some Saturdays.
