CDL Instructor Part-Time

Role Description This part-time CDL Instructor role is an on-site position based in Las Cruces, NM. The CDL Instructor will lead classroom and behind-the-wheel training for learners preparing to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, ensuring instruction aligns with federal, state, and institutional standards. Daily responsibilities include delivering lessons on safety regulations, vehicle inspection, driving techniques, and logbook compliance, as well as demonstrating proper operation of commercial vehicles. The instructor will assess learner progress through skills evaluations, written tests, and performance reviews, providing constructive feedback and coaching to support successful mastery of CDL competencies. Additional duties include maintaining training records, ensuring safe use of equipment and training areas, collaborating with program staff on scheduling and curriculum updates, and modeling professional driving behavior at all times.
Qualifications

• Current, valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record and substantial recent over-the-road or commercial driving experience.
• Experience teaching, training, mentoring, or coaching adults in a classroom, lab, or field environment, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
• Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, safety standards, vehicle inspection procedures, and best practices for commercial driving.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills, with a commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful learning environment.
• Ability to follow institutional policies, complete documentation accurately, and maintain detailed student performance and attendance records.
• Capacity to work a flexible part-time schedule, including evenings or weekends as needed, and to perform the physical tasks associated with vehicle operation and training.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training, teaching certification, or experience in workforce development or adult education is preferred.
• Familiarity with basic computer applications (e.g., email, learning platforms, document and spreadsheet software) for communication and recordkeeping.
