Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced CNC Mill & Lathe Programmer to join our manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience programming CNC mills and lathes, setting up machines, selecting tooling, determining speeds and feeds, reading blueprints and GD&T, and troubleshooting machining issues.
This position requires someone who understands the complete machining process from reviewing a blueprint and developing the program to setting up the machine, proving out the program, and producing a finished part that meets quality requirements.
Duties
- Develop, write, modify, and optimize CNC programs for CNC mills and CNC lathes.
- Program machines using G-code, conversational programming, and/or CAM software.
- Program and support various CNC controls, including Fanuc, and similar systems.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, schematics, GD&T, and machining specifications.
- Determine the proper machining sequence, tooling, workholding, speeds, feeds, and cutting parameters.
- Set up CNC mills and lathes for production and first-piece runs.
- Install and align fixtures, vises, chucks, workholding devices, cutting tools, and raw materials.
- Verify and simulate programs and toolpaths before production to identify potential errors or interference.
- Perform program prove-outs and first-piece inspections.
- Make necessary program, tooling, offset, and machine adjustments to achieve required dimensions and tolerances.
- Perform precision measurements using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and other inspection equipment.
- Troubleshoot programming, tooling, setup, machine, and part-quality issues.
- Make offsets and adjustments to compensate for tool wear and material variation.
- Monitor machining processes to maintain consistent quality and productivity.
- Optimize existing programs to improve cycle times, tool life, efficiency, and part quality.
- Identify opportunities to reduce scrap, rework, and machine downtime.
- Maintain accurate CNC programs, setup sheets, tooling information, and production documentation.
- Work closely with machinists, quality personnel, engineering, and production management to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Assist machinists and operators with programming and setup questions as needed.
Skills
- Proficiency in CNC programming languages specific to Fanuc control systems.
- Strong knowledge of CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD for engineering CAD design and schematic interpretation.
- Experience with CAM software for toolpath generation and machining simulation.
- Mechanical knowledge including blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T), and mechanical blueprint interpretation.
- Familiarity with electrical discharge machining (EDM) processes is a plus.
- Ability to operate measurement tools like calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, micrometers, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
- Understanding of manufacturing processes involving CNC lathe and milling machines in metal machining environments.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles to streamline operations effectively.
