What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) Coordinator position at Domtar?
This position is a member of the Owensboro Converting Leadership Team and plays a critical role in managing Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs that provide a safe and incident-free work environment as well as ensures minimal impact on the overall environment. The EHS Coordinator is responsible for leading and supporting the site-wide EHS strategy and culture through technical support, program development, and relationship building. The incumbent will ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements as they relate to occupational health, safety, loss prevention, and the environment. As a member of the site’s leadership team reporting to the Mill Manager, the EHS Coordinator is expected to collaborate with his/her peers to ensure the facility succeeds in achieving continuous improvement in all performance KPI’s.
Key responsibilities and percentage of time spent on each:
- Identifies, manages, directs, and audits the systems required to limit risk factors leading to safety incidents, environmental incidents, and compliance issues; manages the continuous improvement of the site’s EHS program.
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and corporate safety and environmental regulations, including but not limited to written programs, certifications, permits, documentation, and training. Accurate records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines.
- Promotes health, safety, and environmental responsibility / sustainability stewardship by:
- Engaging with and involving employees to develop, implement, and raise awareness of programs and improvements.
- Driving results against goals and tracking progress.
- Analyzing injury / incident data for trends.
- Investigating issues and recommending improvements.
- Drive the plant safety program towards the goal of an incident free workplace and OSHA regulatory compliance.
- Ability to facilitate return to work programs and modified duty assignments.
- Occupational health experience including hearing conservation and respiratory protection program management, medical and employee exposure record retention.
- Experience with various industrial hygiene strategies including noise exposure monitoring, air sampling, radiation safety, etc.
- Experience tracking and communicating Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
- Compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Actively lead and involvement with Safety Committees and Audit teams. Able to build and maintain strong relationships with all levels of personnel.
- Lead efforts in the plants sustainability plan and identify initiatives to reduce the plants carbon footprint.
- Develop and execute the plant’s safety and environmental training programs.

- Prepare regulatory reports and permit applications
- Communicate with local, state and federal agencies
- Provide technical support for capital projects and process related issues in the EHS area
- Training and/or educating staff at all levels in environmental and safety issues and responsibilities
- Manages plant Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) system
- Lead and/or supports teams pursuing plant safety and environmental objectives
- Coordinate and lead plant wellness initiatives
- Acts as a member of the plant leadership team working closely with union personnel
Preferred Education/Professional Experiences:
- Five (5) years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within the safety field. Certified safety professional.
- Experience working in a union environment is a plus
