What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Estimator position at Dome Construction?
Thousand Oaks, CA
At Dome Construction, estimating is more than numbers. It is about understanding the work, anticipating challenges, and helping set projects up for success. We are looking for a skilled Senior Estimator to play a key role in shaping complex commercial projects from the earliest stages of preconstruction.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys digging into details, partnering closely with project teams and trade partners, and bringing both technical expertise and leadership to the estimating process. You will lead major estimates, contribute strategic insight during preconstruction, and help mentor the next generation of estimators.
What you will do
As a Senior Estimator, you will lead the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates for large scale commercial construction projects. You will review drawings and specifications, perform and oversee detailed quantity takeoffs, and analyze material, labor, and subcontractor pricing. Your work will support conceptual, schematic, and final estimates, including design build and GMP projects.
You will manage trade partner outreach from start to finish by preparing bid packages, soliciting qualified partners, leveling bids, and negotiating scope and pricing when needed. You will evaluate risks, identify cost saving opportunities, and support value engineering efforts throughout preconstruction.
Collaboration is central to this role. You will work closely with project managers, fellow estimators, and leadership to ensure estimates are thorough, organized, and aligned with Dome's standards. You will also mentor junior estimators, help drive best practices, and contribute to continuous improvement of estimating tools and processes.
What we are looking for
We are seeking an experienced estimator with a strong background in commercial construction. The ideal candidate has eight or more years of estimating or preconstruction experience, with the ability to lead complex estimates and manage multiple deadlines at once.
A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field is strongly preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced skills in quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and drawing interpretation are essential. Experience with Bluebeam, On Screen Takeoff, or similar estimating tools is expected.
You should be comfortable working with trade partners, navigating bid comparisons and negotiations, and clearly communicating estimate details to both internal teams and clients. Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and a collaborative leadership style are critical to success in this role.
