The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General (1-6) in the Criminal Division. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Assistant Attorney General 1-6, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a license to practice law in the State of Louisiana;
  • Must be in good standing with the Louisiana Bar Association;
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) mainly for state wide, state court appearances, but also for continuing education and other conferences, as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate the ability to handle litigations in both federal and state courts;
  • Experience in motions practice and presenting oral arguments, in state courts;
  • Knowledge of collections laws, garnishments, state and federal court practice and procedure, and state agency collection practices;
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including listening and editing;
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines;
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, foster teamwork, promote a positive work environment that recognizes and respects all employees, and possess good judgement.

Job Specification

The selected candidate will represent the State of Louisiana, State agencies, and State employees in legal matters as assigned. The position also assists federal, state, and local agencies in the investigation and prosecution of a wide range of criminal matters.


Job Duties and Other Information

The duties and requirements of an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal division shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Screens assigned cases to determine the appropriate criminal charges based on the facts, evidence, and applicable law;
  • Initiates criminal proceedings by preparing and filing Bills of Information or presenting cases for Grand Jury indictment, as appropriate;
  • Represents the State of Louisiana throughout all stages of assigned criminal matters, including arraignments, hearings, motions, trials, sentencing, and appeals, when applicable;
  • Negotiates and resolves criminal cases through plea agreements or trial while exercising sound legal judgment and prosecutorial discretion;
  • Maintains regular communication with victims and other stakeholders to provide case updates and ensure compliance with victims' rights requirements;
  • Conducts legal research and prepares pleadings, motions, memoranda, briefs, opinions, correspondence, and other legal documents necessary to prosecute assigned cases;
  • Maintains accurate and timely case files, including documentation of court proceedings, case activity, deadlines, and prosecutorial decisions;
  • Provides legal guidance and assistance to federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies regarding criminal investigations, arrests, search warrants, and other prosecutorial matters;
  • Drafts Attorney General Opinions and other legal opinions when assigned;
  • Performs administrative duties related to the position, including maintaining required reports, case management records, travel documentation, and other assigned responsibilities;
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with supervisors, law enforcement agencies, victims, witnesses, court personnel, and other stakeholders regarding assigned matters;
  • Maintains regular attendance, complies with established work schedules, and works additional hours as necessary to effectively perform the duties of the position.
