Duties And Responsibilities
Training & Canine Development
- Conduct hands-on scent detection training for program dogs, from early scent association through advanced alert behaviors, following standardized protocols.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and enriching environment for all training dogs.
- Implement and refine training plans based on program protocols and ADI standards.
- Shape and refine alert behaviors using systematic training protocols; recognize subtle behavioral indicators and make evidence-based adjustments.
- Evaluate individual dogs for scent aptitude, trainability, and placement potential.
- Record training outcomes with consistency and accuracy, to uphold program data integrity.
- Support and collaborate with other instructors and handlers to maintain program-wide training integrity.
- Follow established procedures for scent sample handling, labeling, and storage.
- Ensure all samples are used safely and ethically, following Dogs Inc’s standards and research protocols.
- Input and maintain accurate digital records for scent exposures, training sessions, and performance metrics in IWDR, Microsoft Excel, and other approved systems.
- Assist with handler instruction, including supporting clients during in-person and virtual training sessions.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with clients and colleagues to uphold the organization’s mission of transforming lives through dog-human partnerships.
- Provide educational support materials and contribute to client follow-up and recertification when requested.
- Collaborate closely with the Scent Detection Program Manager, other training teams, and canine care departments to ensure smooth coordination and consistent communication.
- Participate in interdisciplinary meetings to align scent detection goals with overall organizational strategy.
- Represent Dogs Inc professionally at internal trainings, demonstrations, and external scent detection events as needed.
- Minimum 2–3 years of professional service dog training experience; experience in scent detection strongly preferred.
- Passion for mission-driven, ethical training that improves lives through dog-human partnerships.
- Working knowledge of scent theory, sample handling, operant conditioning, and positive reinforcement techniques
- Familiarity with Assistance Dogs International (ADI) standards and best practices
- Service Dog Instructor Certification preferred (ADI or equivalent)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across teams
- High attention to detail and ability to input training data accurately; comfort using spreadsheets, databases, and digital tracking systems is essential.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and other training documentation systems. Familiarity with IWDR is preferred.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to work directly with dogs, including bending, crouching, lifting up to 50 lbs, and standing for extended periods. Regular outdoor work is required.
- Work Environment: Primarily campus-based, with exposure to dogs, scent samples, and training tools in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Supervision: Works under the direction of the Scent Detection Program Manager; may mentor volunteers or interns as assigned.
