What are the responsibilities and job description for the Food Service - Cook, 5.5 hours per day position at DOE RUN ELEMENTARY?
Summary Statement: Under supervision of Food Service Manager, prepares attractive, nutritious meals for student and staff in accordance with National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. Prepares and cooks all food in accordance with safe food handling practices and proper recipe instructions.
Essential Functions:
- Shall perform skilled work in the preparation of food according to pre-planned menu, using selected and tested food and recipes.
- Shall schedule food preparation time so that food is ready promptly at serving time. Food to be taste-tested for quality before serving.
- Shall prepare food in appropriate quantity, assuring adequate portions for all and avoiding leftover foods to the greatest extent possible. Responsible for reading recipes and converting measurements. Shall inform manager of supplies needed well in advance.
- Shall make sure that serving lines are adequately supplied with food at all times
- Shall follow safe food handling practices and maintain standards of health, sanitation and safety as required by the State Board of Health.
- Shall be responsible for proper use, operation and sanitation of all kitchen equipment.
- Shall keep work and storage areas clean and sanitary in an efficient manner.
- Shall sweep the floor in the kitchen preparation area.
- Shall checkout purchases and commodity foods from storerooms, refrigerator, and freezers on a daily basis.
- Shall receive, issue, and store food and supplies as directed by the Food Service Manager.
- Shall assist the Food Service manager in maintaining perpetual food inventory and take physical inventory.
- Shall observe areas where help is needed and do whatever is necessary to expedite work.
- Shall assume additional responsibilities in the absence of the Food Service Manager.
- Shall display an attitude of cooperation and accommodation to all co-workers, students, faculty, and administration.
- Shall perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities assess needed or as the Food Service Manager may assign.
Other Duties:
- Operates Food Service equipment and utensils properly and carefully.
- Uses proper food safety handling procedures.
- Wears appropriate attire for Food Service Kitchen.
- Avoids unsafe practices that can result in injury.
- Follows proper lifting procedures.
- Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the operation when Manager is not available.
- Assumes responsibility for all equipment under his/her area.
- Assumes responsibility for daily receipts and sales when Manager is not available.
- Assumes responsibility for checking deliveries when Manager is not available.
- Guards against waste of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Uses older stock first
- Maintains and cleans equipment regularly.
- Is careful in the use of supplies and equipment to avoid unnecessary loss or damage.
Required Education: High School Diploma or GED
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Certified Food Handler or willingness to become certified.
- Knowledge of necessary sanitation precautions and procedures during food preparation and storage.
- Ability to read recipes and convert measurements to the desired quantities.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn requirements of USDA Meal Pattern as specified by the USDA Child Nutrition Program.
- Prior outside cooking experience or experience as a school food service utility worker.
- Ability to withstand having hands in water and tolerates extremes in temperature.
- Ability to lift up to fifty pounds and stand on cement floors up to six hours.
- Possess the physical ability to perform the above responsibilities.

$20.18 per hour, with an increase to $21.18 per hour after the 1,040 hours of probation period is completed.
External Candidates will be required to provide mandatory clearances. This includes the Act 34 (State Criminal Clearance), Act 151 (Child Abuse) and Act 114 (FBI Clearance). All Clearances must be within 1 year.
