Purpose Statement

Provide K-12 students and their families a link to mental health services by identifying students, communicating with families, and building the connections necessary for all students to be successful in USD 443.

Essential Functions

  • Advocate for students' education, safety and well-being.
  • Support students in foster system, CINC, and other family support programs.
  • Participation in Individual Education Program meetings as needed and assist in the development of intervention plans in which school social work services are appropriate.
  • Serve as liaison and advocate between the schools, families, and community mental health center to ensure quality care for students.
  • Assist USD443 Behavior Coordinators in providing behavior interventions in classrooms.
  • Provide individual and group counseling.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Make home visits when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with school-based staff and administrator.
  • Attend School Mental Health Team meetings.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to operate standard office equipment and software applications

Ability to perform basic math including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios

Ability to organize work, set priorities and meet deadlines

Knowledge of appropriate codes, policies, regulations and laws

Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; conflict resolution; stages of child development and behavior; basic disabilities; and behavioral management strategies.

Ability to gather, collate, and/or classify data

Ability to communicate with tact and patience

Ability to diffuse confrontations

Ability to work with diverse groups and individuals

Ability to solve problems and assist with creating action plans

Ability to establish and maintain constructive relationships

Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and to remain flexible and creative

Ability to work with frequent interruptions

Education, Certification

Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field or Bachelor's degree in another area and currently in an accredited Social Work Program with a minimum of (Six) completed credit hours in the social work field.

Experience

Social work and knowledge of educational processes preferred

Physical Demands, Working Environment

This position generally requires the following physical demands: occasional lifting and carrying up to twenty (20) pounds, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 15% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and in a clean atmosphere.

Attendance

Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance/punctuality as required by the Board of Education policies and regulations. Must be regularly available and willing to work during school hours, or such other hours as the district determines necessary or desired.
