POSITION SUMMARY:

The Trauma Registrar will be responsible for daily case finding and data abstraction on trauma patients. This includes the daily activities of the trauma registry such as concurrent data abstraction, data validation, reporting, and identifying performance improvement opportunities. The Registrar may provide trauma education opportunities to hospital staff, EMS providers, and the community.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS (Required upon hire /transfer to this position )

· Experience in healthcare related services, preferably in the emergency/acute care setting

· Successful completion of Anatomy & Physiology Course preferred

· BLS within 6 months of hire

· Completed an approved Trauma Registry Course with in (12) months of hire

· Completed the American Trauma Society ICD10 Injury Coding Course within (12) months of hire

· Completed the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM), Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) course within one (12) months of hire

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE­:

· Experience with data collection, analysis, and report writing

· Understands concepts of quality and performance improvement preferred

· AIS/ISS & ICD-10 coding experience preferred

· Requires ability to work independently and within groups

· Knowledge of State, Federal, JCAHO regulations, and American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT) Designation requirements

· Computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

· Continuing education in trauma related topics

· Good written and verbal communications skills required

· Prefer Bilingual- English/Spanish

    Responsibilities:

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    · Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices.

    · Represents DHR Health Trauma Services Department favorably to the community

    · Consults with the Trauma Program Director and Trauma Medical Director to enhance overall program direction.

    · Maintains all patient, staff, and DHR information and documents in compliance with hospital policies regarding patient confidentiality and privacy.

    · Accurately identifies the patient population for entry and tracking into the Digital Innovations CV5 Trauma Registry in compliance with the National Trauma Data Set (NTDS), the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS-COT), Texas Department of State health Services of EMS, and DHR specific requirements (e.g. ICD-10 code, transfer, death, ICU admission, length of stay, readmission)

    · Determines validity of collected data.

    · Communicates identified opportunities with the Trauma department staff, leadership, and physicians.

    · Ensures the facility meets all trauma registry requirements to maintain its Trauma Center designation.

    · Assists with trauma activation billing.

    · Participates in trauma data for injury prevention, research, and trauma related projects.

    · Obtain 8 Trauma-related CEs per year

    · Other duties as assigned.

        CUSTOMER SERVICE:

        Provide excellent customer service to all DHR customers. All employees are required to attend the DHR C.A.R.E.S program which outlines the Customer Service Principals including: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence through Knowledge and Safety & Social Conscience.

        AGE SPECIFIC:

        Employees must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement relative to his or her age.

        B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.

        C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
