The Probation and Parole Officer is responsible for supervising and investigating criminal offenders through the provision of probation, parole, and pardon assigned to the district office.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience in corrections or law enforcement; OR

Three years of continuous active military duty (all Military Occupational Specialties apply); OR

Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR

A bachelor's degree.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

This position requires the incumbent to handle and carry firearms.

Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Supervises adult felony and misdemeanor offenders in the community through case management, counseling, and referrals to community resources to address social adjustment, employment, substance abuse, and behavioral issues.

  • Enforces court-ordered and parole supervision conditions by monitoring offender compliance, documenting violations, and completing all stages of the violation process in accordance with agency policies and legal requirements.

  • Conducts comprehensive criminal justice social background investigations and prepares detailed reports with recommendations for courts, parole boards, pardon boards, and executive authorities to support informed decision-making.

  • Performs law enforcement duties including arresting offenders for violations, transporting offenders to detention facilities, preparing violation reports, and testifying or participating in probable cause and revocation hearings.

  • Investigates and determines victim restitution obligations, establishes payment schedules, and collects and processes restitution, supervision fees, fines, court costs, and other criminal justice-related payments.

  • Assesses offender needs and facilitates placement in substance abuse treatment, vocational rehabilitation, mental health programs, and other rehabilitative services; provides crisis intervention and assistance in securing emergency support services.

  • Ensures all supervision and case management activities comply with applicable policies, legal requirements, and American Correctional Association (ACA) standards governing offender supervision and documentation.

  • Administers drug screening procedures by collecting urine samples, evaluating test results, and documenting findings to monitor offender compliance with substance abuse conditions.

  • Supervises and monitors offender participation in community service programs, ensuring assigned work is completed in accordance with court or supervision requirements.

  • Supports correctional oversight activities by assisting with audits of facilities housing department inmates, conducting contract compliance reviews of Community Rehabilitation Centers (CRCs), and participating in disciplinary hearings for offenders assigned to these facilities.

Appointment Type
: Probational or Promotion of a permanent, classified employee of the Louisiana State Government.

  • Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Probation and Parole Officer 1, 2, or 3, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.

Compensation:
Special Entrance Rates:
The Probation and Parole Officer 1-Adult has a Special Entrance Rate of $1,872.00 Bi-weekly.
The Probation and Parole Officer 2-Adult has a Special Entrance Rate of $2,003.20 Bi-weekly.
The Probation and Parole Officer 3-Adult has a Special Entrance Rate of $2,213.60 Bi-weekly.
