Lead HVAC/R Service Technician – Job DescriptionPosition Summary
The Lead HVAC/R Service Technician is the senior field expert responsible for performing advanced service, diagnostics, and repairs on residential and commercial HVAC/R systems while supporting and mentoring junior technicians. This role ensures high-quality workmanship, customer satisfaction, and adherence to company standards. The Lead Tech acts as a technical resource, trainer, and field leader for the service department.
Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Expertise & Field Work
- Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on HVAC/R equipment (furnaces, AC units, heat pumps, boilers, RTUs, refrigeration systems, etc.).
- Complete maintenance, tune-ups, and system inspections with a focus on identifying deficiencies and repair opportunities.
- Execute system startups, commissioning, and equipment replacements as needed.
- Ensure all work meets local code requirements, manufacturer specifications, and company quality standards.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide on-the-job training, guidance, and support to junior and mid-level technicians.
- Lead by example in professionalism, customer service, and technical performance.
- Assist the Service Manager in evaluating technician skill levels and providing feedback.
- Support team members on difficult diagnostics or jobsite issues.
Customer Interaction
- Clearly communicate findings, repair options, and recommendations to customers.
- Build trust with homeowners and business clients through professionalism and honesty.
- Ensure proper documentation of work performed, parts used, and future recommendations.
Operational Responsibilities
- Assist in reducing callbacks through accurate diagnostics and quality workmanship.
- Help maintain inventory levels by reporting parts usage and needs.
- Follow company processes for quoting repairs, collecting payments (if applicable), and providing job updates.
- Maintain a clean, organized service vehicle.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow OSHA, EPA, and company safety protocols at all times.
- Properly handle refrigerants, chemicals, and electrical components.
- Perform lockout/tagout and other safety procedures when required.
Qualifications
- 4–7 years of experience as an HVAC/R service technician.
- Strong background in both residential and light commercial systems.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills with a high first-time fix rate.
- EPA 608 Certification (Universal preferred).
- NATE certification preferred.
- Ability to mentor and lead technicians in the field.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
