What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horticulture specialist position at DMACC?
Job Summary
Assist the Horticulture instructors in the operation of the greenhouse, landscapes and gardens to facilitate the student learning process during the growing season.
Essential Functions
Grow and / or assist in growing plants for Horticulture Program labs and work experience activities. This may include planting, harvesting, pest control, planning, weed control, pruning, landscaping, etc.
Maintain the softscapes, hardscapes, production plots and other items in the outdoor and indoor Horticulture Program areas.
These areas include but are not limited to the landscape, greenhouse, fruit and vegetable plots, high tunnels, nursery production area, coolers, labs, etc.
Assist in Campus Tree Program
Assist in supervising student workers and interns. Train students on the use of work site equipment.Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Horticulture experience. Ability to lift 35 lbs and work in both an indoor and outdoor setting throughout the year.
Self-motivated and able to work independently as needed
Greenhouse growing and maintenance experience.
Desired Qualifications
Certification or the ability to acquire an Iowa Pesticide Applicators license for categories 1D, 10T, and 3G.
Work Schedule
Seasonal position. A majority of the hours are used during the growing season. Weekend, holiday and school break hours required.
Flexible weekly schedule available based on an average of 20-25 hours a week.
