Description
This position is responsible for development of new products and support of existing products.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
- Carry out hands-on lab bench work on various chemistries
- Set up and run synthesis experiments
- Document all testing and results in laboratory notebook
- Develop and document robust methods that can be scaled up to the manufacturing plant
- Function as the technical expert for a family of products
- Assist engineering, production, etc. in scale-up and process hazard review activities
- Participate in training of operations staff
- Report to management, sales team and customers on progress of laboratory investigations.
- Safe operations in compliance with Dixie standards, including participation in ongoing safety program
Qualifications
Requirements
- BS or MS degree in Chemistry
- 5 years of industrial R&D experience
- Demonstrated technical work experience in a chemical laboratory environment
- Strong bench chemistry skills, including basic analytical testing
- Experience with standard organic synthesis techniques, separations, distillations and pressure reactions.
- Ability to design and conduct experiments with minimum supervision
- Ability to work independently, self starter, self organizer
- Demonstrated creative problem solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Good diagnostic/trouble-shooting skills to support plant manufacturing
- Familiarity with anhydride chemistry and/or Diels-Alder reactions a plus
- Knowledge of paper sizing chemicals, fuel and lubricant additives and anhydride-based epoxy curatives a plus
- Familiarity with cGMP related to pharma intermediates a plus
- Thermal analysis (DSC, DMA, TGA) skills a plus
- Familiarity with the following testing: GC/LC, specific gravity, viscosity, gel time a plus
- Ability to interpret data from NMR, GC-MS, FTIR, etc. a plus

Primary environment: May require exposure to the manufacturing areas where under certain areas require the use of personal protective equipment such as fire-retardant clothing, respirator, safety glasses with side shields, goggles, hard hat, steel-toed boots and mandatory hearing protection.
