Job Description

Position is responsible for providing Physical Therapy services to meet the individual needs of students with fine motor, sensory/perceptual motor skills and self-care skills.   The Physical Therapist (PT) is responsible for screening and assessment; goal development; and planning/implementing appropriate intervention services to maximize student learning.

 

Minimum Qualifications

A license to practice as a Physical Therapist as issued by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy. 

Experience providing Physical therapy in a school based setting preferred.

Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of Physical Therapy.

Demonstrate good knowledge of medical, surgical, and/or pediatric information and indications for Physical therapy.

Experience with evaluating the functional status of students, designing treatment plans, and providing safe and effective therapy to students with fine motor impairments.

Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.  

Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and record keeping skills.

Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Terms of Employment:        10 months (200 days)

Essential Duties

  1. Evaluates and assesses the student’s functional status to identify and determine needs for Physical therapy.
  2. Selects, administers, and interprets specialized motor skill assessments.
  3. Gathers background information as necessary on the student’s educational, medical, social, and psychological history to assist with determining possible causes of gross motor delays.
  4. Serves a member of an interdisciplinary team and participates in child study, IEP, staffing, and eligibility meetings as required.
  5. Develops individualized education plans for students receiving Physical therapy services and implements therapy sessions that target IEP goals.
  6. Chooses appropriate activities for developing the student’s functional mobility,  gross motor, positioning, strength, range of motion, muscle tone, daily living skills, etc.
  7. Provides effective consultation to other related service personnel to allow for a coordinated multidisciplinary approach.
  8. Recommends the adaptation of the student’s learning environment as necessary.
  9. Provides consultation to teachers and staff members to ensure the integration of motor development techniques into the student’s classroom routine.
  10. Monitors student progress, re-evaluates IEP objectives, and adjusts delivery of Physical therapy services as appropriate.
  11. Conferences with parents/guardians and provide them with support and information regarding their child.
  12. Instructs parents/guardians in exercises to implement at home and in the care and use of specialized equipment.
  13. Serves as a resource to staff members and conducts workshops at the assigned school(s) regarding Physical therapy services and proper procedures for the identification and referral of students.
  14. Consults with physicians and other agencies as necessary and assists with referring students to appropriate specialists.
  15. Adheres to legal and ethical standards and guidelines regarding the provision of Physical therapy services.
  16. Maintains thorough records for each student receiving Physical therapy services at the assigned school(s) and provides related reports.

 ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS 

  1. Abides by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
  2. Attends meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
  3. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  4. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of:  current best practices, techniques, and methodologies of instruction; the principles of educational assessments and principles and methods of differentiated instruction.
  6. Ability to apply and maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children with a variety of learning needs, maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.
