The National Quantum Laboratory (QLab) at the University of Maryland is seeking a Senior Manager for its outward-facing activities. QLab provides state-of-the-art quantum computing resources and user support to a broad range of researchers and scientists via fellowships and collaborations. The center supports start-ups in the quantum space and provides educational resources and outreach activities for stakeholders and community members to grow quantum literacy and the quantum workforce. To this end, QLab aims to make available information and educational materials and activities at all levels, from the general public, educators, students from middle to graduate school, government officials and visitors.
Duration: The position is initially for 3 years with the option to extend depending on the funding availability.
The Research Development Manager will work with the QLab director to develop programs for outreach, education, and public relations for the center. The Research Development Manager will organize and present content at events, such as summer schools, workshops, public events and other educational activities. These will be coordinated with similar efforts conducted by other units and academic departments at UMD, such as Maryland Day, open houses etc. The Research Development Manager will help develop, maintain and update the QLab website as a content portal for QLabs offerings and activities. The Research Development Manager will instigate new collaborations and partnerships to foster the mission of the center. The Research Development Manager will lead applications for grant funding to support the center’s outward facing activities. The Research Development Manager will support grant applications towards the center’s other activities.
This position is considered essential and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergency to help maintain the continuity of University services.
Physical Demands: Sedentary work. The employee will need to be able to sit for long periods of time to work on a computer, as well as travel occasionally to meet with clients and customers on and off campus. There will be travel to job-function-related conferences and meetings. Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms. Regularly required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: Three (3) years of professional research development experience. One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional staff.
- Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
- Knowledge of tools and strategies to improve the identification of funding opportunities.
- Knowledge of developing creative and competitive proposals.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
- Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
- Previous experience that allows the candidate to support the center’s research mission is preferred.
- A PhD in Physics, Computer Science or another relevant field.
- 5 years of professional experience in quantum technology
- Expertise in the field of quantum computing or quantum physics.
- Enthusiasm and documented track record in communicating scientific topics (in quantum physics/quantum computing is preferred) to a broad range of audiences.
- Ability and experience teaching quantum computing or quantum physics to scientists outside the quantum field.
- Experience in successful grant funding applications.
