Position Summary:
The Controller is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all financial operations, accounting processes, and financial reporting for the company. This hands-on position ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial data in a dynamic, service-based organization with project-based revenue, multiple locations, and variable workforce demands. The Controller will partner with executive leadership to support strategic decision-making, maintain strong internal controls, manage cash flow, and ensure regulatory compliance in a growing consulting/services environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, job costing, and revenue recognition for consulting and training services.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, reports, and analyses (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes; analyze variances and provide actionable insights to leadership on profitability by project, client, or service line.
- Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, accruals, and adjustments.
- Coordinate and support external audits, tax filings, and compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and any industry-specific requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks.
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and working capital; optimize billing and collections for service contracts and safety supply sales.
- Oversee payroll processing for a multi-state workforce, including field-based safety consultants and officers.
- Provide financial support for business development, pricing strategies, and operational decisions (e.g., project profitability analysis).
- Collaborate with HR, operations, and sales teams on financial matters.
- Ensure compliance with multi-state tax, sales tax, and workers’ compensation requirements common in the construction/safety services industry.
- Implement process improvements, automation, and system enhancements (e.g., accounting software, ERP tools) to scale with company growth.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA, CMA, or MBA strongly preferred.
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in a Controller or senior accounting role; experience in professional services, consulting, or construction/safety industries is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, and cost accounting (especially job/project costing).
- Proven experience with multi-entity or multi-state operations, payroll, and service-based revenue models.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar); advanced Excel skills required.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to translate financial data into strategic insights for non-finance leaders.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
- High integrity and commitment to ethical financial practices.

- Experience in a services or consulting firm with variable project revenue and field-based employees.
- Familiarity with safety/compliance industry regulations or construction accounting.
