The Position
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Technician to support the upkeep of buildings on a federally protected historic site. This position is based on Fort Monroe and may involve coordination with federal, state, and local municipalities to ensure the property is maintained to the highest standards of safety, functionality, and historical integrity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on building systems.
- Maintain clean, safe, and litter-free interior and exterior property areas.
- Respond to service requests promptly and document work.
- Conduct general plumbing and electrical repairs (toilets, lighting, etc.).
- Perform routine maintenance and repair on central and/or individual air conditioning units.
- Keep entryways clear of snow and ice as needed.
- Operate tools, equipment, and state-owned vehicles safely.
- Oversee vendors working on-site to ensure compliance with property and historical preservation guidelines.
- Follow OSHA, and EPA, safety guidelines.
What We're Looking For:
- High school diploma or GED (required); vocational training preferred.
- At least 3 years of building maintenance experience.
- Prior experience with commercial or historic buildings a plus.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance and general building systems.
- Excellent communication skills; team-oriented and customer-focused.
- Able to meet the physical demands of the job, including movement around the property, use of tools, and occasional lifting or manual labor in different weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate state vehicles.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including participation in a rotating on-call schedule for emergency response.
